Late Night Open Thread

Susan Boyle is on America's Got Talent doing a killer version of the Rolling Stones' Wild Horses. I'll add the video when it's up.

The winner to be announced in a few minutes will be either Barbara Padilla or Kevin Skinner. This is an easy one, it will be Barbara Padilla Kevin Skinner. (I definitely got that one wrong.)

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

I just want to say "Hallelujah!" that freakin' Verizon finally - finally - after 4 weeks! - got our DSL line up and running again...the frustration of dealing with overseas customer service cannot be understated.

    That should be (5.00 / 1) (#3)

one of our water heater manufacturers tried shipping tech support to India...they lost so many accounts after plumbers complained they had to ship it back to the good ol' USA.  Probably cost them millions of dollars in business.  Penny wise pound foolish I believe is the term.

Joe & Jane Blow might put up with that crap...but not Joe the Plumber!

and who doesn't think the Voltaggio brothers rock?

Bryan, Michael V, Jen and Kevin are my front-runners; cannot stand Michael I.

    so no spoilers, please!

There's a very funny live blog on Gawker. The commenters there have a nickname for the obnoxious Michael I--"Amuse Douche."

and my favorite too, is Jennifer Carroll, the chef de cuisine at Eric Ripert's restaurant. Conflating her persistent mispronunciation of "ceviche" and her no-nonsense demeanor, they've nicknamed her "Sa-beetch." But it's affectionate, or as affectionate as the Gawker crew gets.

but she has proven not just to be a good chef, but someone who can manage a kitchen.

I'm pulling for the Maryland boys (even though Michael is in California now!) - the Voltaggio brothers - and am dying to go to Volt - Bryan's restaurant in Frederick, MD - which is an easy drive for us.

but I do tire of their sibling rivalry, or at least what Top Chef's editing room has made of it. Then again, almost every season has had a couple of some kind, so why not two brothers? They are very talented.

Susan Boyle did say her first album will be a collection of songs we wouldn't expect her to sing. I will be interested to hear how many albums sell during the week of the release...I may have to pre-order if that's offered.

Her performance last night was fantastic.

by dissenter on Wed Sep 16, 2009 at 11:49:10 PM EST
Jeralyn - do you have a legal opinion as to whether it is constitutionally legal to fine Americans as the Baucus plan outlines? I am no legal scholar or a lawyer but how in God's name can you fine someone up to $3800 per year because they can't afford health coverage? Further, how can you force someone to buy something that is junk insurance?

I don't see how the car insurance argument works here. You can choose to drive a car. Driving theoretically is optional.

Anyway, I haven't seen anyone comment on the constitutionality of this idea.

casts what everyone is calling a "fine" as an "excise tax".

I suspect someone in the insurance industry, when they were drafting the bill for Baucus, ran the constitutionality of such an enactment through analysis just to make sure that it would be constitutional.  But I have no opinion on whether it would be.

As I recall them, excise taxes used to be levied on optional expenditures - I recall that at one time auto tires were subject to one, and luxury items were subject to another.

One where it's either "pay for crap insurance or pay the government", i.e., not an optional purchase, seems a bit more dubious.

    H1N1 and hand sanitizers (none / 0) (#14)
by scribe on Thu Sep 17, 2009 at 06:48:25 AM EST
The other day, in another open thread, someone mentioned that hand sanitizers are basically pure alcohol with some admixtures to thicken them up so they don't drip and maybe some fragrance.

My understanding is that alcohol being alcohol and skin being skin, one can absorb alcohol through their skin, which leads to this:

QP:  has anyone ever heard of someone failing a DWI test and blaming it on the hand sanitizer?

    Just asking.

show I've seen so I searched him and found the videos of his first and last performances on AGT.  He is a natural talent, has a beautiful and emotional voice.  His first performance singing If Tomorrow Never Comes was just awesome.  I'm so glad he now has an opportunity to live his dream!
