Via Steve Benen and Media Matters, The Economist reports Dick Armey favors a public option. Benen writes:

Armey accidentally tell The Economist that the public option may be a good idea.

"If you in fact freely choose to enroll in Medicare that's a wonderful gift, it's a charity, it's something I applaud. But when they force you in, that's tyranny."

The Economist added, "In arguing against the Democrats' plan, he says that Medicare is a form of tyranny, and that citizens should be able to choose to enroll in the program. This choice, between a public plan and private ones, is precisely what the Democrats propose in a public option."

Now Dick Armey is on board. Now to get Max Baucus . . .

    Your headline almost gave me a heart attack.  Glad to know it is not a case of Dick Armey developing some sort of principals, but merely his ordinary dishonest appraisal of something that is not actually being proposed.

    You non-Texans may not know this, but Dick is his middle name. His first name is "The".

    doesn't give people options. It ought to be tweaked so that anyone could choose to go with the public option or choose the private one. At this point it doesn't though.

    with Medicare-for-all would go a long way towards restoring my faith in government and politics. Coming out of it without something close to that, whatever they choose to call it, will be a huge disappointment, and more so the longer it drags on. If they are going to disappoint me, I hope they do it quick.
