Luskin to Represent Financier Allen Stanford

Robert Luskin, best known on the blogs for his representation of Karl Rove, is taking over the defense of financier Allen Stanford in his criminal case in Houston. Dick DeGuerin has moved to withdraw, citing lack of assurances the court or receivers will authorize the release of necessary funds for his representation.

Stanford is being held in what DeGuerin called "oppressive conditons" in a private jail (The Joe Corley Detention Facility in Conroe, Texas). His motion to have Stanford moved said Stanford is in a single cell with 8 to 10 other inmates, the temperature is over 100 degrees, and sometimes they have been held for hours in total darkness due to electricity going out. He asked that Stanford be moved to a BOP facility but the Judge denied the request.

conditions", then so too are the other prisoners. Seems to me the Joe Corley Detention Facility in Conroe, Texas needs to be shut down if it cannot or will not provide human conditions for the prisoners.

there like Stanford, awaiting trial and either denied bail, or can't make bail? Bad enough to treat convicted prisoners this way (nobody needs to be subjected to this). Even worse- these are people who have been charged, but not even convicted of anything yet! Whatever happened to "innocent until proven guilty"? I realize that some of them (like Stanford) may be considered flight risks, but there's got to be a better way to deal with this.

I am sure that they are billing the Gov for A/C even though there is none. Interesting that in reports last week I read that the company that runs the prison says there is no overcrowding and the A/C is running 24/7.

Privatization of prisons in the US is BushC sick.

that the government can freeze all of someone's assets based on unproven allegations (no matter how powerful the suspicion), and thereby prevent the person from hiring (i.e., paying) an attorney to assist him in disproving or casting doubt on those very accusations. I doubt that Luskin is willing to represent Stanford pro bono -- why should he? -- so I wonder why Luskin's confidence in getting paid under these circumstances is greater than DeGuerin's.
