Feds Tour MI Standish Prison as Possible Sub For Gitmo

Federal officials are in Michigan today touring the Standish maximum security prison scheduled to close in October:

The officials are from the departments of Defense, Justice and Homeland Security. The prison is the only employer in the town. But the prison guards think their jobs would still be toast because the feds would bring in their own guards. There's also fear that the feds would seize some homes near the prison to expand the prison's perimeter.

    They definitely need all the jobs they can get.

    Even if the prison guards don't get to keep their jobs, which I hope won't be the case, the town is going to be in much better shape with an operating prison than without one.  The local cafe won't do very well with nothing but unemployed customers, etc.

    a town economy can't get along without a god-damned prison...what a sorry state of affairs.

    looking to invest any capital Wile?  I've got a live music/gambling hall/gourmet reefer establishment business model I've been bouncin' around, just gotta get some laws repealed and I think its a winner.

    What you should look at is hunting and fishing.  Michigan is a haven for hunters.  A guide service.

    nothing about...Standish is gonna have to figure this one out...hopefully without relying solely on humans being placed in cages.

    there's not a lot happening in Northern Michigan any more, other than tourism.  It's sad.  Here's an old article that gives you an idea of the history and character of Standish.

    My cousin is a prison guard in rural Montana and he's awfully glad to have that job.  Hey, at least he's not a lawyer.

    in upstate NY...industry all gone, prisons offering some of the few decent jobs.  It sure is sad my man...the way of the world I guess, towns go boom and bust.

    Prisons as salvation...hard to wrap your head around ya know?  Double decker sadness.

    a prison in the U.P.  My wife's family is from there and they could also use the influx of some revenue.

    and amazingly, I think I only made one trip to the U.P.  Some beautiful spots up there.

    The governor doesn't want them there, Rep. Hoekstra, who is running for governor doesn't want them there, many of the townspeople don't want them there.

    They'd all rather have prisoners from California's overflow.
