GOP Senators Snowe, Martinez Announce Support For Sotomayor

U.S. Senator Mel Martinez (R-FL) today issued the following statement regarding his intent to support the confirmation of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to be Associate Justice on the United States Supreme Court.

"Given her judicial record, and her testimony this week, it is my determination that Judge Sotomayor is well-qualified to serve as Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. "Judge Sotomayor is knowledgeable of the law, would be a fair and impartial judge, and seems to have a good understanding of the limited role the judiciary plays in our democracy.

"Judge Sotomayor's rise to the Supreme Court is testimony to the fact that the American dream continues to be attainable. As an Hispanic American, I take great pride in Judge Sotomayor's historic achievement. Given her qualifications and testimony this week, I intend to vote in favor of her confirmation."

When I get copy of Senator Olympia Snowe's statement announcing her support for Sotomayor, I will post it here.

Other likely yeses - women, states with Latino voting blocks, endangered Rs,

None seen. While some may not like the nomination they are safe to say yes (assuming we keep racking up R yeses)and not likely to anger Obama on this.

Sotomayor is to her right in many areas.

of course martinez is a yes vote, to vote no would be committing political suicide. that was a given. snowe also was pretty much of a given, unless she too had no further aspirations, and was going to retire at the end of her present term.

i haven't a clue how good a justice judge sotomayer will be, but i apparently have a better grasp of the judiciary's powers than sen. martinez does:

the limited role the judiciary plays in our democracy.

i would strongly urge sen. martinez, and all the republicans, wherever they may be, to read the constitution: the judiciary is still one of three co-equal branches of our government. as such, it's role is on par with both the executive and legislative branches. were that not intended to be the case, the author's surely wouldn't have made the glaring mistake of giving it the authority to override both of the other branches.

i'd hardly call that a "limited role in our democracy". but then, that's just me.
