    Representative Nancy Pelosi of California, who in 2002 was the ranking Democrat on the House committee, has said in public statements that she recalls being briefed on the methods, including waterboarding. She insists, however, that the lawmakers were told only that the C.I.A. believed the methods were legal -- not that they were going to be used.

    By contrast, the ranking Republican on the House committee at the time, Porter J. Goss of Florida, who later served as C.I.A. director, recalls a clear message that the methods would be used.

ALBANY (AP) - Democrat Scott Murphy leads Republican Jim Tedisco by 401 votes out of more than 160,000 votes cast. And of the contested ballots not yet counted in the 20th Congressional District, twice as many are from voters registered in the Democratic Party or allied minor parties compared to those from voters registered in the Republican Party and its allies.

A finish line could be in sight in the race for the 20th Congressional District. With the numbers not looking good for Republican Jim Tedisco, sources tell Capital News 9 that Tedisco could concede to Democrat Scott Murphy as soon as Friday afternoon.

AUSTIN -- Legislation allowing state university students and employees to carry their concealed handguns on campus appears to have enough pledged support from lawmakers to pass the full Texas House.

The bill would prohibit public universities across Texas from creating rules that forbid concealed handgun license holders from carrying their pistols into a classroom, but it would allow private institutions to exempt themselves.

Chances for passage in the House -- if it gets there -- look strong, as 76 members have signed on to support the bill, authored by Rep. Joe Driver, R-Garland.
