The winds have kicked in something fierce. I can barely make out the houses across the street. All I see is white blowing snow.

So far 200 flights have been canceled and most highways have shut down. The local news is telling people to stay off the roads and asking employers to send people home.

The snow and gusty winds will create whiteout conditions that will make driving anywhere extremely treacherous or even impossible. Travel on the roads are HIGHLY DISCOURAGED between noon and 9 p.m. today. Expect hazardous driving conditions all over the state but particularly on the Eastern Plains and along Interstate 25.

The Denver Post is now predicting 19 inches of snow for Denver. It won't be over until tomorrow. I hope the heat, cable and internet hold out.

as by this point in the season, "snow days" no longer are as much fun . . . as well we know here, where we just marked the anniversary of that much snow and more a year ago.

By late March, we want to put away the sleds and boots and shovels and get out the gardening tools and bikes. And we sure tire of power (and thus often water) outages. Hope that doesn't happen.

I was well prepared and hale and hearty enough to make it home safe and sound. I am a bit out of shape for thrugging through snow, up-hill and into the wind, though. It's hard work!

after early spring mild weather and can really dampen your spirits. One consolation: It'll be gone soon. It's not the same as heading into or in the midst of winter. That stuff could be with you for weeks or months.

But the early spring snow will soon be gone.

Of course, I don't live in the mountains so what do I know.

you are getting the big snow that we here in MD haven't had for a couple years - the kind where there is no question that the office will be closed and no one can go to work: a guilt-free day off!

Hope your power holds up - we are all electric, including well, so no power means no nothing. But you know, there is something relaxing about no TV and no computer - snuggling in front of a roaring fire in the fireplace and making hot chocolate on a camp stove...and red wine tastes best at room temperature anyway!

I was in Littleton for a Christmas Eve blizzard in the '80's (I think) - 26 inches. I spent Christmas morning shoveling snow from the driveway in the hope that I'd be able to get to the airport to return to sunny California. To no avail, or course. Flights were cancelled.

Then there was the unexpected 16 inches of snow in September one year... but that's another one of those Rocky Mtn. surprises.

Blizzards are ok as long as you don't have to go anywhere and you have power. My advice: stay put, put another log on the fire and get some hot chocolate going.

(or was it '04?) blizzard - 36 inches in 2 days in Castle Rock!! I couldn't get out of my driveway for 3 days. I shoveled it, then the snowplows plowed the road and made a 4 foot drift at the base of the driveway. Had to shovel another half day.
Got great pictures though. I'll post a link later - can't get to it from the work machine.

I remember that one. I was stuck at the bus station trying to get to Fort Collins for Christmas. Got in a big fight with my brother after about 4 hours and he hoofed it home while I stayed for another 8 hours or so until they finally admitted that no busses were going to hit the road today.

The weird thing was, downtown hotels were offering a discount to stranded travelers and my poor, younger self could actually afford it. So I (along with some fellow stranded travelers) walked in thigh deep snow, leaving hard plastic chairs in a noisy, cold bus terminal to... soft lights, soft music, soft chairs and lovely glass of wine.

Bro walked back downtown in the AM and we went home for Christmas. Where the roads were completely clear.

Around Dec. 22, I think 1982? Worst one ever. I flew in from New York that night and someone stole my luggage at baggage claim -- I spent months filing claims with my homeowners insurance fighting over "replacement value" of my clothes...a nightmare.

when I lived out there. Gets a little mushy sometimes near the base, but I love the warm sun and the snow and not freezing my face off.

Just camne back up from the beach here in Fla where we had a 80+ degree day..wish we could share the warmth!!..and the lovely day..
