Late Night: Tracks of My Tears

Adam Lambert on American Idol tonight.

We're waiting for the snowstorm of the season here in Denver ...more than 15 inches are expected, it's the only thing on the news.

Here's an open thread, all topics welcome.

    Christina Applegate is on Letterman (5.00 / 1) (#2)

talking about her experience with breast cancer last year (we seem to be on that theme this week).

I have to say: she looks fabulous.

    Wow (5.00 / 1) (#3)

That was quite a performance.  I haven't watched Idol in quite a few years, I think.  I looked up some of Adam's other stuff... he's an amazing performer, no doubt, but I don't think I could ever forgive him for mutilating "Ring of Fire" like that!

In other news, mom and baby are still doing great.  Grandma is here from Michigan to help out for a few weeks which is a huge boon.  I am frankly pretty jealous of her, she's newly retired and now she just gets to kick back and enjoy the two most precious grandkids who ever lived.  For myself, I'm going on 40 and just starting the hard part!

but it doesn't get him off the hook for that atrocity!  Look, Johnny Cash and Freddie Mercury were buried in separate graves for a reason.

was hoping he would do something bold with papa was a rollin stone but absolutely loved his performance last night. Complete control, no yelling and moving.

I think he may be the most talented artist they have had on their show in all the years they have been on.

JLivston, I also loved 'ring of fire'... the judges keep harping on the singers to show their artistry and take a song and make it their own...

...that is what Adam did in his own unique way...I agree with you, I loved it...and definitely showed what an amazing range Adam has

hear the band enough to figure out what he was doing with the tonality. Try this one (studio version)

Folks still may not like it, but at least you can hear and understand the arrangement.

(Who does these arrangement ideas? Do the singers come up with it, or are they given it?)

DonaldfromHawaii...I certainly respect your comments however I must disagree...first, most of the 'kids' on this show never heard of 'the gong show' and american idol is in no way comparable to 'the gong show'

...in essence, American Idol is a talent show, but in the current times and the 21stC with everything evolving at a rapid 24/7 pace, American Idol provides a fantastic showcase for these young people/singers to have a chance at breaking into the business and making contacts and networking along the way...and have lots of fun while they are at it...

...for example, how do you think Jennifer Hudson got to where she is...her talent was showcased and 'found' while appearing on AI...one thing leads to another and more and more doors open...

...Don, give it a chance...if you give it a see you may also be charmed and find yourself routing for these brave young souls...innocent and hungry for recognition and fame and with a strong desire to entertain...

    I loved Adam's version of this song , but no one (5.00 / 1) (#4)

can top Smokey.  Linda Ronstadt did this song on one of her albums many years ago and I just love it.  She has such a beautiful voice.   Love her version of Ooh, Baby Baby, too.  In fact, I think I like everything Linda Ronstadt sings!

    Same here (none / 0) (#6)

    workers in renegotiating severance terms.

Fantastique! And won't happen here in the good ol' US fo A--probably mean disappearing into some Navy brig.... Via Tina at The Agonist, French workers hold exec hostage while demanding changes to lay off terms! From The Guardian article:

Luc Rousselet, the French director of the US company 3M, had been held captive since arriving at the plant in Poithievers south of Paris for a visit on Tuesday. Staff took turns to guard him over 24 hours while demanding better severance packages for laid-off staff and better conditions for those remaining. The company, an industrial conglomerate best known for known for Post-It notes and Scotch tape, confirmed Rousselet had experienced no violence. Journalists saw him through the blinds of his office eating a lunch tray of a plate of meat and mashed potato, an apple and mineral water. Last night staff said he would be served mussels and chips for dinner if he was kept the whole night.

"This action is our only bartering tool, but there is no aggression involved," said Jean-François Caparros, a delegate from the Force Ouvriere union. "It's out of the question that the director leaves the site unless we get something," he added, after initial talks through mediators failed. Workers at the plan began a strike on Friday over company plans to cut 110 of the site's 235 jobs....

    Bossnapping! Brilliant!

Exec now released after agreeing to renegotiate terms.

Let's see--apply this tactic to Big Banksters? Big Pharma? Big Insurance? Recalcitrant Dems who've forgotten what the Democratic Party is about?

    Oh, well....

No tears tonight for a great American (none / 0) (#1)

gone, but he never will be forgotten, so no tear but only cheers . . . because his work lives on -- still assigned in classes more than half a century after his first book that changed American historiography because of how he wrote of his people as part of American history.

Nor will I ever forget meeting, as well as hearing and reading, Dr. John Hope Franklin.

but I missed most of it last night. Maybe I can find it on Fox?

Anyway, I sang "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" last weekend at a karaoke party at a friend's house.

Not an easy song just to make sound decent, at least for me. To do what Adam did? Wow.

Oops, sorry, meant Tracks of My Tears. (5.00 / 1) (#15)

I very rarely torture people with my singing voice via karaoke...but when I do I stick to Dylan or the Beastie Boys...the warbler or the talkers...never a singer like Smokey.

    You've got guts:)
