    Brackets? (5.00 / 1) (#1)

    Brackets, Indeed. (5.00 / 1) (#26)
by cpa1 on Wed Mar 11, 2009 at 11:48:27 PM EST
I was ready to go to sleep and I had this revelation about brackets and then I come on here and the title of the first posting is Brackets!

Even though I won my wife's school's Final Four competition by 10 points, 2 years ago, I am not here to talk about basketball.

Why isn't it unconstitutional to tax hedge fund managers at 15% while the rest of us had a top tax bracket of 35% and soon 39.4%?

It that not a plutocratic conspiracy that our constitution is supposed to prevent?  Can congress gratuitously select one demographic group of people, who just so happen to make large political contributions to pay less taxes than everyone else?

Will my little girl be able to root for her Gators this year?  She's too young to be exposed to the horror that is the NIT.

Looks like I'm going to be stuck at this arbitration hearing all week, btw.  Sure hope I don't miss the birth of baby #2, y'know?

15 of the players currently play no pro baseball either majors or minors in this country with names like: Cordemans, Stuifbergen, Van Kampen, Duursma, and Van Klooster. They do have two players that may be on major league rosters this year with Rick VandenHurk (Marlins) and Sidney Ponson (currently unsigned).

    Formal Coalition of Blue Dogs (5.00 / 2) (#31)
by Anne on Thu Mar 12, 2009 at 09:51:28 AM EST
in the Senate, from Think Progress today (Thursday).  Emphasis was in the original.

Roll Call reports that a group of 15-20 moderate Senate Democrats -- boosted by their success in "paring down the more than $900 billion economic stimulus bill to $787 billion" -- plans to "formally announce next week that it is aligning as a loose coalition or working group focused on deficit reduction and fiscal responsibility":

Led by Sens. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.), Tom Carper (D-Del.) and Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.), members said early press reports of their meetings were mischaracterized as an opposition group to President Barack Obama's agenda and budget. But they acknowledge that they are seeking to restrain the influence of party liberals in the White House and on Capitol Hill. [...]

[Nebraska Sen. Ben] Nelson said the moderate bloc is modeled after the Blue Dogs, but that the realities of the Senate prevent them from being as organized or unified as the House group, which regularly wins concessions from House Democratic leaders.

But as one anonymous Democratic senator told Roll Call, "Once you decide to be part of a bloc that is completely dislocated from the main [Democratic] caucus interests, you've not only separated yourself, you've also burned a lot of bridges." Politico previously explained the possible implications of such a group, writing, "If the moderate Democrats in the Senate are willing to work with moderate Republicans...they will negate the White House's ability to portray opposition...as partisan obstructionism."

This just makes me feel sick.

Should be a great tournament. But I still disagree with those who want to add more teams. If anything, it should be reduced. Nobody wants to watch #1 v. #16 or #2 v. #15 seeds anymore. In over 180 games played, a #16 seed has never won, and a #15 seed has won only five times before losing their next game.

I'm a youth sport coach and we have practise tonight so I'll probably miss the show, so here's my take on the best ones based on last night:

    1. the Robert Downey Jr.-looking guy,
    2. the Salvadoran girl rocker who sings like Melissa Etheridge,
    3. the delightful smiley quirky blond girl (not the skin and bones blond, although she was really good too),
    4. Adam the rocker,
    5. and Lil.

I have the 2 blonds equal. I think they each have their own "thing". The smaller one's looks totally don't reflect what she's capable of singing. It looks like we could have some good solid competition with more depth than usual.

In her first audition she looked like any young mom you'd see at the grocery store - long straight hair, no makeup, cardigan, jeans, comfortable shoes (ok, maybe I exaggerate) but one of the judges suggested she should try to "look the part" and, sure enough, the next time we see her - short hair with fluorescent dye, glam makeup, short skirt, low neckline.

Like one of those movies where plain Jane gets a makeover and succeeds in getting her male "best friend" to "perk up."

    And she can really sing.
