Late Night: Death Cab for Cutie

Here's Grapevine Fires, the new animated video of the Death Cab for Cutie song.

"Grapevine Fires" was initially inspired by DCFC vocalist/guitarist Ben Gibbard's up-close-and-personal encounter with 2007's California wildfires. The song - which was recently included on "CHANGE IS NOW: RESTORING AMERICA'S PROMISE," the official commemorative CD-DVD set celebrating President Barack Obama's historic inauguration - motivated Walter Robot to create an animated short film which brilliantly relays the sense of devastating tragedy and forced optimism caused by the fire's wrath.

Guitarist/keyboardist Chris Walla blogged the Democratic Convention for Rolling Stone. We did a CNN show together the day of Obama's acceptance speech at Brooklyn's Bar and Grill and then made our way by media bus together to the Pepsi Center (quite an ordeal) and I really like him.

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

This is a beautiful song and an interesting visual. Oddly the visual anchors the music in a specific and sad way, nevertheless the music swims on. Could be quite personal. The music really does not seem fiery but rather arid, humid and passive. Maybe it is helplessly (and beautifully) fiddling while California burns.

I'm wondering if the conjoining of this song and anything Obama makes sense to me. It has that sense of longing (hope) for something - something different (change). And it has lots of fear and impending doom, and that always sells, politically at least.

It is a beautiful song.  Great video.
Both the song and video have a sense of impending doom but doesn't that sumbolically match the times that we are in?

To get political for a second, congrats to Obama on selecting Craig Fugate as head of FEMA.  Fugate was the head of Florida's Emergency Management under Jeb Bush and Charlie Crist.  What this appointment shows me is that Obama is trying to select the best person for the job instead of using political affiliation as the main criteria.

Key Senate Democrats are wavering in their support of legislation that would give more power to labor unions, dealing a setback to labor's top priority as businesses warn of the damage the bill would cause.

The battle over the "Employee Free Choice Act" -- expected to be introduced Tuesday -- is seen as a power struggle among labor unions and businesses, as well as a test of whether moderate Democrats and Republicans will push back on Democratic congressional leaders and the Obama administration.

At least six Senators who have voted to move forward with the so-called card-check proposal, including one Republican, now say they are opposed or not sure -- an indication that Senate Democratic leaders are short of the 60 votes they need for approval.
