NBC: Fitzgerald to Stay On

NBC reports that Patrick Fitzgerald will stay on as U.S. Attorney in Illinois.

I don't think this was in doubt. When the Chicago Tribune editorial board interviewed Obama in March during the campaign, he was asked about this and said:

Kass: “[You have told us before] that you would reappoint or seek to maintain Patrick Fitzgerald as the United States attorney.”

Obama: “I think I said it here in the boardroom.”

Kass: “Given the investigations that are going on now, if you’re elected president .”

Obama: “I still think he’s doing a good job. Yes.”

Kass: “Would you keep him? And why would you keep him?”

Obama: “I think he has been aggressive in putting the city on notice and the state on notice that he takes issues of public corruption seriously.”

    I'm curious. Is Fitzgerald's star (none / 0) (#1)

    still as bright today as it was 5 years ago?
    I don't know how the legal community feels, but for me the answer is no.

    excellent Asst AG.  Many think that he 'played politics' in tipping his hand re: Blago before the case was ready; I say, Fitz got exactly what he intended from the get-go -- appointment of a Senate replacement for Obama's seat that wasn't purchased.

    he/she took as mayor.

    I always thought that the Chicago/Illinois guys would come up with a plan where Fitz was put in charge of investigating something so big that it would look like a gigantic promotion.

    Sort of like the famous 1932-33 Congressional hearings in which New York City Assistant District Attorney Ferdinand Pecora exposed the criminality of the speculators who caused the financial collapse of 1929-32; Samuel Insull, and JPMorgan's Edward "Jock" Whitney, wound up in prison; and the American people knew they had been screwed once again by the rich and powerful.

    Leading a Justice Department operation to do that, or something similar, would take Fitz out of Chicago and let them appoint a new US Attorney who would ensure Chicago continues its unbroken streak of unindicted mayors
