Tuesday Late Afternoon Open Thread

Via Susie Madrak via Lance Mannion, a great interview by Jesse Pearson of David Simon, ranting and raving about the issues of the day, talking about The Wire and his new show, Treme. Well worth the read.

This is an Open Thread.

David Levine passed away this morning (5.00 / 2) (#7)

He was the great caricaturist for the New York Review of Books. His best known piece is probably the image of LBJ showing a surgical scar shaped like Vietnam.

when your overpriced "high speed internet" is slower than AT&T's 3G, you need to invest in your connection. A T1 is generally insufficient these days.

Seriously, I remember back in the day, when dreamed of being able afford a T1 line.  How times change.

on Monday, ABC airs what is basically the  Canadian version of the Wire. It's called Davinci's Inquest  and the final season is finishing up right now. I don't know if they'll keep airing it after that.

The show actually started before the Wire and what I've seen of it is pretty great. It's centered around Dominic Davinci, a Vancouver coroner. It follows him and a host of other police. Unlike the Wire they don't really incorporate the POVs of the criminials, but it seems like a pretty realistic series.

    Classic drunkspeak.

However, former Rep. Mr. Foley is rather stretching it to equate that with pedophilia and predatory abuse of power in his case.

    no true comparison of actions.

But, I think he's got a point that arguing for the entire population on an issue as costly and important as health care and insurance premiums while under the influence is egregious enough to warrant discipline on a severe level.

It appears the voters may mute him for good.

people would prefer to ignore. On politicians

They sublimate any moral imperative to their own personal ambition. They wed themselves to the capitalist construct and they embrace the status quo at all costs.

Looking forward to his new show.

These ignorant motherf*ckers. What do they think group insurance is, other than socialism? Just the idea of buying group insurance! If socialism is a taint that you cannot abide by, then, goddamn it, you shouldn't be in any group insurance policy

While waiting for some holiday leftovers to warm, I surfed this lovely instance of product placement:

Police: Young Fla. couple plotted to kill mother 32 mins ago
CLEARWATER, Fla. - An 11-year-old Florida girl and her 15-year-old boyfriend are accused of plotting to kill the girl's mother by setting her bedroom on fire while the woman slept Tuesday, police said.

Samantha Broadhead and Jack Ault have been charged with attempted murder and arson after the fire in Clearwater, about 20 miles west of Tampa on Florida's Gulf Coast.

Clearwater Police Department detectives say the young couple poured gasoline on Nancy Broadhead's bedroom floor and bed, and then set the room aflame. Police say the pair escaped in the mother's 2007 Ford Focus

Irrelevant drivel like the condition of the intended target and status of the would-be bed burners follow the product placement.

Remember, at Ford, getting you the f*ck out of Dodge after you gas up and try to immolate your chain-smoking cigarette mom in her bed while she sleeps is Job One!

About 3 PM this afternoon, as I was whiling away the time at the DMV, someone exclaimed "OMG! It's snowing." And so it was. And so it continued. Approx. 4 inches in just a couple of hours. Just in time for the evening commute.

We were expecting cold and maybe rain. Not snow. Not a single local weatherperson found a hint of snow on their various computer/radar models.

Snow is quite the weather event here. We don't get enough of it often enough to have the skills and the equipment needed to deal. There is panic in the air. For many the drive home is taking hours. It's really quite pretty, though. Huge, fat, wet snowflakes.

Temps tomorrow up to the low 40s. Snow replaced by the expected rain.

The very words "OMG It's snowing!" sends me to my car headed for home with a stop at the grocery store...ya never know how long it'll be!  And get me off the roads...too many inexperienced drivers endangering themselves and everyone else on the road...
