Bernie Madoff Moved to Medical Unit at Butner

The Bureau of Prisons has confirmed that Bernie Madoff has been transferred from the medium security prison section of Butner Correctional Complex to its Federal Medical Center. It won't say why, but months ago denied he had been diagnosed with cancer or was terminally ill.

The Federal Medical Center at Butner last week housed 946 inmates . It's an administrative facility that houses male inmates of all security levels.

Being sent to a medical center doesn't mean you're catastrophically ill. Former Congressman Randy "Duke" Cunningham is serving his sentence at the Butner Medical Center, as is blind Sheikh Omar Ahmad Rahman (sentenced to life.)

    that Madoff was beaten.

    Sources told WTVD, the ABC affiliate in Raleigh Durham, North Carolina, that the convicted Ponzi schemer had facial fractures, broken ribs and a collapsed lung and was discharged from Duke two days ago.

    and it may well be our job to "make him pay", but that doesn't mean we're doing it right...we're not.

    I wonder if it was guards or fellow prisoners who pounded on the crooked old man.

    According a report by the Associated Press, Madoff's lawyer - Ira Sorkin - contradicts the assault story, saying his client "had some dizzy spells and some high blood pressure."

    The report also quoted a prison official as saying Madoff was not assaulted. He has been under medical care for seven days.

    The AP reported Duke University Medical Center earlier said Madoff had been treated there, but later a spokeswoman said the hospital had never had a patient by that name.

    I don't know what's going on.

    ... there is no public record of his/her admission and name.  The report from Duke means nothing.  Whether the BoP would flat-out lie regarding a FMC prisoner's diagnosis and/or injuries, I'm not sure. But his lawyer wouldn't know any better than the rest of us, just what the BoP chooses to tell him, at least until and unless he got an in-person visit.

    when they have to.

    A late colleague who was very deeply into the Catholic church used to have nuns (and priests) come over to join his family for dinner from time to time.  These were the "Run-the-hospital" nuns, skilled administrators and executives all.  And they would tell, occasionally, about how (it was always a long time ago) they'd helped (or knew sisters who'd helped) to hide ailing mob guys while they were hospitalized.  The mere fact of the mob guy being ill would make him seem, to his rivals, weak or willing to flip, so the illness was a danger to his life in more than one ways.

    They would usually hide them in the maternity ward and use the "unwed mother hiding her shame" dodge to keep prying eyes out.

    Seriously.

    a lot of people dont seem to get the "double punishment" that so many people have to endure: the loss of freedom, isolation and stigma AND the mental torture of having to live in almost constant fear of retribution and, or, assaults from those out to get a rep in the yard.

    Reading the biography of Joey Gallo, particularly the section in the book covering the years he spent in Attica, brought that phenomenon into very sharp relief for me.
