Tuesday Open Thread

I am having serious computer issues. Every browser is limiting what I can access, and when I write a post and hit "save", it disappears down the rabbit hole.

So instead of reading my thoughts on Alina Habba's (temporary) resignation from the NJ US Attorney's office, or Juan Orlando Hernandez's sudden pardon, only to now face an arrest warrant issued in Honduras, you get another open thread.

Have at it, this is an open thread, all topics welcome.

... to your perspective and thoughts regarding the U.S. attorney kerfuffle in not only New Jersey with Alina Habba, but also the Easter District of Virginia with Lindsey Halligan, who's still laying claim to the office despite the fact that a federal judge rules her interim appointment invalid. Further, the EDVA judges have appointing authority and had reappointed Erik Siebert as interim USA last May, before Trump forced him out over his refusal to pursue former FBI director James Comey's indictment and then tried to replace him with Halligan.

And now, DOJ has demoted Brian Samuels as chief of the EDVA criminal division. What happens if DOJ collapses? The question was nonsensical once upon a time before Trump returned. Now, I'm not so sure things are going to hold up. L.A.'s interim USA got the boot by the courts, and they haven't bother to even nominate someone for the post.

Is anyone else seeing problems where they are?

Hearing that a lot.  Hearing it about housing,

8 years ago I bought this house. For 14,000.00
That is not a typeo, I paid less for this property that you would pay for a good used car.  There was some luck involved but there was several fixer upper type houses that were liveable were available in the 20,000 range.  2016-17

I've done some work but it's still in the late stages of "fixer upper".  I went to the bank to get a equity loan, I like the idea of taking some equity to live on.

I was hoping it would be worth maybe 70,000.

    The official appraisal came yesterday

    It's worth 87,500.00

    Woo hoo.

At a Christmas party at the Vice President's residence, J.D. Vance told a bizarre story from a meeting with Trump.

He, the Secretary of State and an unnamed politician were in the Oval Office discussing something "really, really important," when Trump stopped the discussion to say, "there is something much more important: shoes." Trump looked over the Resolute Desk to the men that they all have "sh***y shoes".

Vance's party attendees roared with laughter.  "We got to get you better shoes," bleated Trump, and pulled out a shoe catalogue and promised to gift each of the men, four pairs of shoes--so he asked shoe sizes.

"He says, Marco, what's your shoe size?" Marco claimed to be size 11 and a half. J.D. responded as being shoe size 13, and the politician, who remained unnamed so as not to embarrass him, says size 7."

Trump leaned back on his chair and says, "you know you can tell a lot about a man by his shoe size." Vance ended the Oval Office anecdote by turning to Mrs. Vance who was beside him, and said, "We won't ask the Second Lady for comment on this particular topic."

This story is problematic on several levels. (1) Why did Vance tell this story?, (2) what does this reveal about Trump's attention span? (3)was he even listening to this "really, really important matter or just looking at their shoes? (4)who are these guests who laughed at this story, (5)who keeps a shoe catalog in his office, let alone the President of the USA, and (6)what are the odds that these men never received these gift shoes?

The increased vitriol, the inability to understand numbers or arithmetic and the inabilty to focus. I would wager any amount he has dementia. In my opinion.

Yet another rather bizarre scandal ... (none / 0) (#13)
by Donald from Hawaii on Thu Dec 11, 2025 at 01:50:53 PM EST
... is unfolding at the University of Michigan involving a football program that had already been beset by multiple serious scandals in recent years, one of which led to former head coach Jim Harbaugh being literally banned by the NCAA last year for repeated recruiting violations, including his alleged tampering with other schools' players.

This time, head coach Sherrone Moore - who had already been suspended for several games during the 2024 season following credible allegations that his coaching staff had been engaged in illegal sign-stealing from opposing teams - has been summarily fired by the university over an alleged "inappropriate relationship" with a female staffer associated with the football program.

This was soon followed by the now-suddenly former Coach Moore's apparent arrest mere hours later in Saline, MI for another undisclosed matter, reportedly a physical assault, which may or may not be related to today's firing. He was then turned over by Saline police to their counterparts in Pittsfield Township, where he is presently being held in Pittsfield Township Jail without bond, pending a review of charges by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor's office.

I noted "apparent arrest" above because as of this writing, Pittsfield Township police have not officially confirmed the identity of the suspect in question. However, both ESPN and ABC News have reported that the person in custody is indeed former Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore, and that he'll remain in jail until a scheduled court hearing on Friday.

Meanwhile, the emotionally whiplashed Wolverines football team and its baffled players are now under the tutelage of associate head coach Biff Poggi, who has been named interim head coach by university administrators. And three weeks hence looms a date in the Citrus Bowl against the Texas Longhorns.

(Sigh!) So many scandals and distractions in Ann Arbor, so little time.

UPDATE: Sherrone Moore has been arraigned. (none / 0) (#25)
by Donald from Hawaii on Fri Dec 12, 2025 at 01:13:43 PM EST
He has been charged with felony assault, and his present legal predicament is indeed related to his firing yesterday as University of Michigan's head football coach. Here's what apparently went down, as best as I can piece together from local media.

Coach Moore, a married father of three, was apparently and improperly engaging in an affair with a subordinate staffer who was employed in the UM football program's administrative office, which is obviously in direct violation of stated university policy. Moreover, the two had earlier been questioned about it by university officials sometime this summer, and both had denied the allegation at the time.

The matter reared its head again in the past week when the nature of Coach Moore's personal relationship with his subordinate had apparently soured badly and devolved into serious personal acrimony, as these things are sometimes prone to do. This prompted the woman to go to university officials sometime during the last few days and confess that she had misled them earlier in the summer when she had denied the affair with Moore, and she sought their protection from retaliation by Moore.

Yesterday afternoon, apparently after consultation with University of Michigan President Domenico Grasso and the UM Board of Regents, Athletics Director Warde Manuel called Coach Moore to his office, confronted him with evidence of his earlier lie to school officials about his involvement with the woman. He Manuel then fired Moore with cause effective immediately and further, had campus police escort him from the building.

Apparently (and understandably) enraged, despondent and humiliated, Moore left campus and immediately drove to his girlfriend's apartment building in nearby Pittsfield Township, whereupon he broke into her place, physically assaulted her and then pulled a knife, threatening to kill both her and himself. She immediately fled from him and frantically called 911 for help. In the meantime, Moore left her building and drove to Saline, where he was arrested and taken into custody shortly thereafter by local police.

Given his earlier suicide threat, Sherrone Moore remains in protective custody in Pittsfield Township Jail following his arraignment today.

    What a mess.
