Monday Night Open Thread

I watched the opening episode of "V" yesterday, it's pretty far out there. Some are linking it to the "hope and changers" that followed President Obama last year. Others say that's silly. The show denies it, saying it's just about blind devotion. If you haven't seen it, you can watch online for free here.

I'm watching DWTS tonight. Here's an open thread for you, all topics welcome.

    on the athletic committee there.  Some meetings can be fun, when you get to say something on the order of, "Honey, you may be the athletic director, but we're your oversight board . . . honey."

    (Had a coach at our campus who, with his asst coaches, was making women students who worked in the Union miserable -- well, except for the one for whom he later left his wife -- and when one of those women students told me the details, I had fun going to the athletic director and telling him that his coach had just hit on the niece of a member of the Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame . . . and that if he didn't do something about it, I would help the girl tell her dad, the Hall of Fame hotshot.  

    (That coach is gone.  Don't miss him a bit, even though he was said to be such a . . . pearl.)

    How do you know this?  

    I learned, not too long ago, through an alumni publication, the Dean of Women when I was at U of M wrote a letter to each student's mom reporting on how the student/daughter was doing.  Including info about biracial dating.

    hasn't cornered the market on blind devotion and while some "obamabots" might fall into this mode most of his supporters are just democrats.

    The show is classic Hollywood.   Just like 24 is classic Hollywood. Anyone trying to find deeper meaning in a TV show needs to put the blog down.

    I noticed that the irritatingly unnavigable HuffiPo inserts a gratuitous "refresh" between the home page and an on/off-site link so a viewer must hit the back arrow twice.

    Now I know that hits and refreshes throw the blogs some ad-love, but wouldn't Huffi's Sugar Addies know they're being punk'd?

    Some just auto-refresh for you regardless, for the same purpose I presume.

    The big lesson/moral I always took from the miniseries is occupations always fail, and in an armed conflict there is no advantage like the homefield advantage.

    Russian homefield smoked the Germans...and only our atomic weapons could overcome Japan's homefield?

    Point taken though buddy...if your are willing to kill tens of thousands in one shot with WMD's, homefield can be overcome.  Good thing the reptiles needed us for food and our planet for resources, otherwise their WMD's might have prevailed.

    of assistants you have there... though I would count my fingers after shaking hands with them if I were you...

    Point being that if you are going to fight a war or a bar room brawl, fight to win and to change the hearts and minds. To do that it is most likely you will have to wack enough of'em to convince them your way is the only way.

    We did that in WWII. We haven't since.

    I ended up watching a show on PBS about the effect of the Beatles in the USSR.  Very interesting--the central theory was that Beatlemania did more to undermine communism than anything else.

    ... like Battlestar Galactica, is pretty free-wheeling in it's political allegory, and isn't likely to be advancing any particular political cause, other than that the premise inherently casts doubt on excessive naivete. I guess that could apply to the most idealistic Obama-ites, but ultimately, I don't think it's really got a lot to say about the real world, except "we want the real world to watch us".

    It might be gentle trolling to get anti-Obama viewers.  I like the loose political allegories and the ominous conspiracy theories, but my real issue is Morena Baccarin's haircut and her ugly silver outfits.  Aliens who travel millions of light years can surely do better than that.  We wouldn't show up to another planet with sentient life wearing khaki shorts and a t-shirt, right?

    before, and last week's premier looked like wonderful escapism again.  And I have found that escapism -- although I usually turn to fiction for it -- has it purposes.  I look forward to the next episode tomorrow.

    I am not crazy about the female FBI agent, she's kind of bland/boring, but the rest, from her cute son to the reporter with the good anchor looks to the V leader are good. The V leader has great posture and very expressive eyes. I like Ryan Nichols too, he's a little intense, but I guess that's the role, and it's better than bland.

    Elizabeth Mitchell (the FBI agent) was on Lost, and I liked her there. I think she's a good actress, even if the the character is underwritten. Morena Baccarin (the V leader) was on Firefly, as was Alan Tudyk (Mitchell's partner, who turns out to be on the scaly side). Scott Wolf was on Party of Five, and is well cast as the anchor, having that Tom Cruise-like perpetually young look to him. I remember the previous incarnation of V well (the mini-series, at least), so I'm willing to give it a shot.

    I like that the Catholic Church is the mix and I think the skeptical priest is well played so far.  Although the current HCR/abortion/Catholic Church thing is not in the script at all, V was the first thing I thought of when it unfolded last week.

    Devotion is dangerous.
