Somalia: Pregnant Adulteress To Be Stoned to Death After Giving Birth

In Southern Somalia, Abas Hussein Abdirahman, 33, was stoned to death for adultery as a crowd of 300 watched. He had confessed to an Islamist court. His pregnant girlfriend will meet the same fate, death by stoning, after she gives birth.

"He was screaming and blood was pouring from his head during the stoning. After seven minutes he stopped moving," an eyewitness told the BBC.

The BBC's Mohammed Olad Hassan in Mogadishu says that if the woman is also killed, her baby would be given to relatives to look after.

Somalia has not had a "functioning government" in 18 years. Last year, a 13 year old girl was stoned to death for adultery -- she had been raped.

when a country is, for whatever reason, left with no real government, anyone with a gun takes over, and criminal activity soars. that country then becomes a danger to every adjacent country.

clearly, somalia presents a danger to any country that uses shipping lanes off its coast, because the pirates based there act with impunity.

it would be to the advantage of somalia's neighbors to step in and clean the place up, restoring a functioning government and police, since we already have our hands quite full elsewhere.

i just don't expect that to happen.

De-evolution in action. The men who "run" the place are the worst combination of mental retardation and religious fanaticism, and they are going to get the only "logical" result from their actions -- the complete annihilation of their own people. (Not that we, in are own less obvious ways, aren't doing a version of the same to ourselves.)

There is no real mechanism for preventing this from happening again, so outside of some sternly worded letters and formal protests, what should be done about it?

    Send in the Marines?

Who could watch this?  What empowers anyone to want to do this or see this?

you could find mothers everywhere who would volunteer for duty if the crime had been against their child, though.

I ask myself that question, too, when I'm changing channels away from the violent, brutual, murder-filled programs we call entertainment.

the woman who will be stoned after giving birth is his girlfriend, and Somalia stoned a 13 yr old girl last year for adultery but she had actually been raped.  Now if some guy raped my 13 year old daughter I would probably be surprised at how empowered I would be to visit some violence on him.

Understood the article. While I certainly don't understand how anyone could stone these people for what they did, I have no doubt that if the crime had been a rape against a child, that would empower some to do this.

Your question didn't reference directly the case of the boyfriend/girlfriend. I can't imagine anyone wanting to participate in that particular case.

But, your question alone could find people willing to stone the perp, depending on the crime.

While I have the utmost respect for the sovereignity of a country, stuff like this shouldn't be happening anywhere in the 21st century.  In the thread it was asked if we should send in Marines, I say yes, along w/UN Peacekeepers, and a whole host of other nations armed forces.  Global economy my a$$, what about the global community?  We on this planet should be able to come together and agree that there is a minimum level of treatment that can be expected regardless of where you live.

    Really? (5.00 / 1) (#14)

I vote NO!  No matter where our troops go, even if they go to take on a force that has encouraged and nurtured open attacks on our nation and 3,000 people killed, they end up being called murderers and aggressors by the serious people of the "Left".  I've seen too much of it, lived too much of it, and no thanks.....no more.  Somalia can figure its own damned problems out and the Marines can stay home until those problems bring on some deep dark millionaire fruitcake to preach and feed attacking the U.S. and then it happens.  Then maybe ......

This is exactly one of the reasons I vehemently oppose radical Islam and its associated Muslim terrorists.

What must be done is for the West, and Obama can lead the charge, to condemn such actions and demand it cease.
