Pre-Thanksgiving Football Open Thread

Turkey Day means football, 3 games in the NFL and one of the college variety.

3 NFL games tomorrow. The traditional games in Detroit and Dallas plus the new NFL Networks game at night. The Lions, who are terrible, have a QB, Matthew Stafford, with a separated shoulder. They are playing the Packers, winners of their last 2. Seems like the Lions always get blown out in this game. I think they will again. I like the Pack (-11).

The Giants travel to Denver. I still do not respect the Broncos. I'll take the G-Men (-6.5). More . .

Dallas hosts the Raiders, who won a game last week. It's a lot of points, by I like the Jerry Joneses (-13.5).

In the colleges, Texas continues its march to the BCS Championship game, facing A&M at College Station. 21 points on the road? A&M winning 8 of the last 13? No matter. I like the Longhorns (-21).

Enjoy your T-Day everyone.

The Lions pulled a win out at the last second Sunday (granted, it was over the Browns).  They will take that momentum and at least turn it into a game tomorrow - 11?  No way.  ;)

The Cowboys have always played on Thanksgiving as long as I can remember.  The night game, which is on the NFL network as opposed to free TV, is a relatively new development.

Has played since 1934 or 1935.  Dallas has been on since around 1965.

The Cowboys have been playing on Thanksgiving since 1966, and have only missed twice -- in 1975 and '77. There is less noise about taking their Thanksgiving game away because they are typically the league's No. 1 television draw.

The Lions have much deeper Thanksgiving roots, having begun their tradition in 1934. Local radio executive George A. Richards had purchased the Portsmouth Spartans and moved them to Detroit and renamed them the Lions that year. As a way of gaining attention in their inaugural season, he decided to schedule a game on a holiday.

And what do you know, the game sold out two weeks in advance. It was such a success, Richards decided to try it again the next year, and the Lions clinched the West division on Thanksgiving in 1935.

It is only playing here in one Landmark theatre complex.  Yes, I know Werner Herzog is the director.  But really; Nicholas Cage.

Not trying to defend Cage in general but I wouldn't include this one among the stinkers.

I actually really enjoyed it and thought it was an excellent movie.

On a completely seperate note, Happy Thanksgiving to all. I'm Canadian so I will be watching football scores online from my desk but I am still going to take this oppurtunity to thank TL; I really appreciate you providing this space. I rarely comment but lurk, A LOT, and have learned so much as a result.

Enjoy your day off, your football and your wonderful meals with your loved ones!

on this thread, but maybe I forgot to hit the post button...?

Anyway, my insufferable Boston brother emailed me earlier today that the Monday Night game will be a Super Bowl preview, to which I responded that Thursday night's game will the SB preview.

Sadly, I think his call has a higher probability...

    Regardless, Go Giants!

put on the wacky throwback uniforms with the striped socks, they won.   Haven't won a game since they went to the blander modern stuff.  If the league allows it, I'd strongly encourage them to go goofy once more.

And yes uniforms do matter for the Denver squad:  wearing their pre-Shanahan Orange Crunch unis, they went to numerous SBs, only to get blown out badly most times.   Something like 0-4.  Then sometime in the 90s they got a new coach and ditched the ugly orange stuff.

G-Men:  good upside potential at the moment.  But at this point I like the Saints to emerge from the NFC and go to the SB.

    Cooking and cooking... (none / 0) (#20)
by Anne on Wed Nov 25, 2009 at 07:42:14 PM EST
the Thanksgiving prep began around 9:30 this morning, with other non-cooking prep in between, and I'm finally taking a break.  Phew!

Turkey brined and now drying out skin - which makes it really crispy when it roasts.

    Dressing made.

Backbone and neck roasted with onions, celery and a little whole garlic, to render fat, develop flavor and create those tasty brown bits for gravy.

    Stock made for gravy.

    Mashed potatoes made.

Celery and carrots cut for the relish tray.  Black and green olives (pimento-stuffed, as well as some with provolone, some with sun-dried tomatoes, and some with gorgonzola), cocktail onions and grape tomatoes standing by.

Green beans topped 'n' tailed.  Those will get cooked/steamed in a lemon-butter sauce and topped with browned bread crumbs and Parmesan cheese.

    Tablecloths washed and ironed.

Two pies made, one still to take out of the oven.

    Apple Gallette started.

House will get cleaned and vacuumed tomorrow.

Sister-in-law bringing spinach and artichoke casserole, creamed onions, and sauerkraut (hate sauerkraut, but my brother, mother and husband all like it), plus sodas.

Daughter's in-laws bringing wine, cheese tray and fresh-baked French bread.

Break time over - time to take pie out of the oven!

Hope everyone has a wonderful day tomorrow!

Happy Thanksgiving, Anne! You deserve a medal for all that work - I hope you have some help.

I took your advice on the brining. Just took the turkey out, rinsed, and dried. Will let you know how it turns out!

    Football Predictions (none / 0) (#24)
by canuck eh on Thu Nov 26, 2009 at 09:52:15 AM EST
The Packers will destroy the Lions without Stafford and maybe Calvin Johnson as well. If the spread was 20 I'd still take GB.

The 'Boys will beat the Raiders but I can't see them covering. They've only scored 7 points in each of the last 2 games and they weren't playing great defenses (Green Bay and Washington).

Broncos/Giants- I'm taking Denver (Full disclosure, I'm wearing an Elway jersey). Neither team is very good (that hurts to type but it's true), despite their early-season records so I see it coming down to a field goal either way. I will be very thankful if the Broncos take it.

    Enjoy the games!
