Johnny Depp Objectifed By People Magazine For 2nd Time

Details here. People is recidivist in its objectification of Depp. He previously was named most sexy in 2003.

Good thing he lives in France, cuz this type of thing has been keeping men down for years and years in the United States.

This is an Open Thread.

that Palin makes?  Inquiring minds want to know.

But poor guy, he's still more than a decade away from being recommended for a routine mammogram under the marvelous new guidelines.  Inquiring minds also are still wanting to know more about this panel, is it appointed by the White House, and who is this panel chair from Colorado?

    Info on that panel, CC (5.00 / 1) (#10)

Yeh, I linked to that in the last thread (5.00 / 1) (#20)

thanks -- but it doesn't quite clarify many of my questions in that last thread, too (questions blown off by a guy commenter; imagine).  I just got more answers from CNN; for one, it is a panel answerable to Sebelius, who is running from this fast. . . .

from the Our Bodies, Ourselves blog explaining the panel's recommendations.  After reading this and reading comments by Dr. Susan Love, I am less worried about the whys and wherefores of the panel's findings. (posted this on a previous thread.)

    This is the link.

right away; that this applies to premenopausal women not yet 50.  Well, that's what you get with a panel that weighs in on breast cancer but not only lacks an oncologist among its members but also an ob-gyn who would be up to data on the data on the decreasing age of menopause. . . .

Another one would be Giles Marini. And my favorite of course is Jon Bon Jovi.

If you all can't appreciate a sexy, great looking-guy, I think that's your problem, not America's.

men don't have the same problem as women in being treated as sex objects...I know I enjoy it when it happens, objectify away ladies!

Maybe its because its relatively a new phenomenon for the fellas post womens lib, post cougar-ism...maybe after a few centuries it gets old, and we will object as the ladies do...but right now most every guy I know digs it:)

    Oh, I doubt that's true (none / 0) (#41)

Women love being considered s@xy and a symbol of romance.

I think maybe you are missing the meaning of being objectified. It's demeaning and disrespectful at the very lowest levels of emotion. There's such a huge difference between being admired/desired and objectified.

Admired and desired is certainly better in my book, but both can be enjoyable.

Granted, it hasn't happened very often, but I have been treated as a piece of meat before...I get the difference.  It's a brave new world out there...you'd be surprised how many women are on the prowl for a piece of meat to use and throw away these days...and I think as long as you know that going in it's allright...to be objectified by someone you admire and/or desire romantically is a different story...that would hurt.

I hope he knows that if he ever decides to run for office there will pictures of him as a pirate on the cover of Newsweek.

Maybe they are replacing actual photographers with image librarians who search existing stock photos for the cheapest images available.

The tabloids do it all the time and they might have more readers than Newsweek!

and, Benny and Joon - he really steals the heart in both of those movies.

What's special about Depp winning, though, is I don't recall him ever playing the romantic lead in a movie.

of Johnny Depp, like the one that Newsweek delighted in displaying?  Are guys who are rated sexy also automatically seen as slutty?  Of course, that slutty is an adjective for women says it all.

Don't most actors and actresses spend all that time in spas and plastic surgery so that people will objectify them?  Not that Depp exactly falls into that mold, but isn't that what Hollywood really is all about?  Pretty people for the most part not doing a great job of that acting thing?  Again, Depp perhaps not falling entirely into that mold, but still.  Beauty is a pretty important part of the entertainment industry - and if it isn't beauty per se, it is definitely about being attractive enough on some level to be sought and bought.

Well, he could have used some makeup (5.00 / 2) (#3)

and all the popparazzi-driven popular media that has popped up in the last 40 yrs, including all the fluffy cringe-worthy celeb cable shows plus all the internet buzz, has only made the problem worse.

And thus substanceless people like Sarah Palin, and the people in the Repub Pty who enable her, see their big opening to make the pitch with the shallow, easily-swayed middle voters.

But then if you call out the pol for running for high office based largely on her looks, you run the risk of being called sexist, n'est-ce pas?

at least in some of his movies. The other pretty boy who's really won me over is Leonardo Di Caprio.

    I just watched 'Body of Lies' (5.00 / 1) (#35)
by Militarytracy on Thu Nov 19, 2009 at 08:58:11 AM EST
Di Caprio is shaping into a good actor.  He always was but has had to get beyond his boyish looking exterior I suppose.  I still can't deal with losing Heath Ledger. I think Depp is a good choice as always.  I can't find beauty in men without talent being there.  There has to be talent and a spark of character in their eye or the beauty is shallow and distasteful to me.  This flaw of mine also causes me to want to see Paul Krugman in his underwear though too.
