Sunday Football Open Thread

I do not know if it says more about me or the current political environment, but I used to feature a Sunday Talk open thread, and now I feature a Sunday football open thread. In any event, I don't watch Sunday Talk anymore, but I do watch Sunday football. I think most football fans will be watching the Sunday night game - the Colts vs. the Pats. Brady v. Manning. Etc.

I like the Colts (-2.5). In the other big game, the Steelers (-7) host the surprising Bengals. 7 seems too much. I'll take Cincy (+7).

The Cowboys (-3) travel to Lambeau to face the Packers. I feel some bounce back in Green Bay. Give me the Pack (+3). Finally, I like Washington (+3.5) and Tampa Bay (+10).

This is an Open Thread.

    Gregory: Hi Hillary

    Clinton: morning Fluffy

Gregory: Secretary Clinton why would we enforce the rule of law against really bad people?

Clinton: Greggers New York City isn't afraid to try these people and bring them to justice

Gregory: but having super-terrorists in New York City is so scary!

Clinton: Calm down Fluffy - I don't how it works in California but here in New York our jails have locks and everything

Gregory: speaking of being terrified of brown swarthy terrorists - why haven't you closed Gitmo yet?

Clinton: we want to leave it nice so we're painting and mowing the lawn first

I love how they refer to David "Stretch" Gregory as Fluffy. (Also, I wonder if the authors used to be with the old American Journal, or the Faux News watchdogs which did the same service to humankind.)

I forget who first recommended the site (and who deserves, at the very least, a cyber-footrub) but it's now a regular Sunday afternoon stop for me.

Life is so much nicer without the yapping heads :) Starting the football day off with the Jets ending with Pats/Colts and the game in between will be which ever has the most of my fantasy players (as long as it doesn't get boring, then I switch around)

the Sunday Blab Fest more often if the networks would make it a regular feature to re-run extensive clips from past, important shows on major historical events.

MTP has their one-minute look-back, but for me one minute is about 29 minutes too short.  It would be interesting and instructive, for instance, to see a current show on Afghanistan, say for the first 1/2 hour, then look back in the remaining time at how some of the major principles from the VN era under Johnson, like Humphrey or Rusk or McNamara, handled questions on that war in front of the panel of actual journalists.

Good history lesson for all of us, and teachers could encourage their students to tune in.

But no, this will never happen.  It's just too darn important for the corp media to give Rudy or St McCain or Holy Joe their 25 minutes then turn it over to the panel of usual Beltway suspects.

Genius! You should type out a 1-3 page outline and send it to PBS, History, the friendly neighborhood Beeb or an independent network while shouting "Ducats, please!"

El cheapo to produce (from existing archival resources on timely anniversaries or related events) and no annoying, smirking Village Idiots. (Well, not as many anyway.)

to watch this show on cable. Seriously

It might also be interesting, just for contrast, to include today's clueless gasbags, too. They could nourish their egos by immortalizing their clueless gasbaggery but also serve as a warning to future generations of journalists, if we have any.

Those pesky Medicare cuts are (none / 0) (#8)
by Anne on Sun Nov 15, 2009 at 03:29:10 PM EST
    rearing their ugly heads again...

A plan to slash more than $500 billion from future Medicare spending -- one of the biggest sources of funding for President Obama's proposed overhaul of the nation's health-care system -- would sharply reduce benefits for some senior citizens and could jeopardize access to care for millions of others, according to a government evaluation released Saturday.

The report, requested by House Republicans, found that Medicare cuts contained in the health package approved by the House on Nov. 7 are likely to prove so costly to hospitals and nursing homes that they could stop taking Medicare altogether.

Congress could intervene to avoid such an outcome, but "so doing would likely result in significantly smaller actual savings" than is currently projected, according to the analysis by the chief actuary for the agency that administers Medicare and Medicaid. That would wipe out a big chunk of the financing for the health-care reform package, which is projected to cost $1.05 trillion over the next decade.

More generally, the report questions whether the country's network of doctors and hospitals would be able to cope with the effects of a reform package expected to add more than 30 million people to the ranks of the insured, many of them through Medicaid, the public health program for the poor.

In the face of greatly increased demand for services, providers are likely to charge higher fees or take patients with better-paying private insurance over Medicaid recipients, "exacerbating existing access problems" in that program, according to the report from Richard S. Foster of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Though the report does not attempt to quantify that impact, Foster writes: "It is reasonable to expect that a significant portion of the increased demand for Medicaid would not be realized."

    Link

The president, through his spokesperson, Linda Douglass, is still asserting that "health insurance reform will protect and strengthen Medicare"..."And he has also made clear that no guaranteed Medicare benefits will be cut."

So, seniors will still have the insurance coverage, but they may have to look harder to  find providers that accept it.  Ditto with those poor enough to qualify for Medicare.  Seems like this would be making care less accessible to them, no?

Sheesh, it's bad enough that this "reform" effort is going to mean millions with insurance but without increased access to care, and now, it looks like seniors will be joining them in that unhappy circumstance.

It's starting to look like having health insurance will be the equivalent of getting that letter from Publisher's Clearinghouse notifying you that you may have won!  Instead it will be, "Congratulations!  You're covered!"  The fine print will tell you that you have a 1-in-100,000 chance of finding someone to honor your coverage.

Insurance companies will not be hurt, though; thank goodness for that, huh?

You might be glad to know about several important provisions in H.R. 3962 that will specifically impact the cost and availability of health care for Washington state residents.  As you may know, I was selected by Speaker Pelosi to serve as one of the key negotiators on behalf of low-cost states to craft an agreement that would end decades of geographic disparities in Medicare reimbursement rates and will transform the payment system for Washington state and other high-quality, low-cost states.  With the inclusion of two Institute of Medicine studies that will make recommendations on how to fix the Medicare payment system we have taken an important step towards changing how health care is reimbursed in this country, shifting the focus to the quality of care provided rather than the quantity of services prescribed.

In addition to this important shift away from the fee-for-service model, reimbursement reform will reduce the cost of uncompensated care for hospitals and health care providers by $28 million dollars in the First Congressional District alone, and will expand access to physicians for Medicare beneficiaries across the state.  Due to the geographic disparities I described above, senior citizens in our state have long suffered from limited access to care, and for this reason Medicare Advantage (MA) has played an important role in our state for seniors who might otherwise have trouble finding a physician.  For this reason, I fought for language that will create an incentive system to increase payments to high-quality MA plans in low-cost areas.  Through this provision, seniors will continue to have access to affordable medical care and quality physicians.

This quote is part of a lengthy email I received from Jay Inslee, Democratic representative from WA State.

Nancy Pelosi was here a week ago touring Swedish Hospital, a model used for HCR, with Inslee and Jim McDermott. Two very respected representatives.

could be coming.  It's now 10-0 Green Bay.

And one of the alltime great Lambeau Leaps by Rodgers and the fans, very funny.  (A lot of family are there among the fans and report the game is almost as good as was the tailgating -- the first real Wisconsin-style tailgate climate this year,  which called for hauling out the hip flasks of schnapps, hot buttered rum, and other yummy refreshments to warm the bones for hours in the November weather.)
