Wednesday Night Open Thread

Is anyone watching the Country Music Awards? Taylor Swift gave an impressive opening performance. It's a strikingly all white audience. Carrie Underwood sings well, but she has the personality of a piece of furniture. Other than America's Next Top Model, I don't see much else to watch. I'll probably only tune in for Keith Urban, Sugarland and Kenny Chesney.

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

... and recorded stuff, as nothing on TV has grabbed me yet.

I was late to the party on this TL threadlet about some great flicks on TCM.

But I did want to recommend checking out your local Cinémathèque to catch great classic films of all genres, documentaries and other off-the-beaten track fare that might not often get shown on TV (or be easily available on DVD/BR). Nice screens, comfortable spaces, beautiful clean prints.

Appropos of Veterans' Day, here's the history behind Cinémathèque Française, which became a worldwide, film preservation movement and archive:

The collection emerged from the efforts of Henri Langlois in the 1930s to collect and preserve films. Langlois had acquired one of the largest collections in the world by the beginning of World War II, only to have it nearly wiped out by the German authorities in occupied France, who ordered the destruction of all films made prior to 1937. He and his friends smuggled huge numbers of documents and films to unoccupied France to protect them until the end of the war.

You can get a membership, a series pass or a pay-go and it's a great value. You'll also be supporting the preservation of film as the artists intended, and that might otherwise be chopped and tweaked to suit the fashion of the times or be expedient to newer media (eg, formatted/edited for TV, stretched or shrunk for time, bleeped and "denuded" for the churchy set, yadda yadda.)

It's a nice weekly trek, too. I love their summertime series and walking/cycling over and then chatting afterwards with fellow film geeks.

Elite? Nope. Art belongs to everyone with a mind, a heart and a soul -- and that's all of us.

    Live television (5.00 / 2) (#7)
by lentinel on Wed Nov 11, 2009 at 10:08:07 PM EST
I think one of the most sinister things that corporate America did to us was to end live television.

When TV started, there were live dramas. Live newscasts. Live comedy shows. Live variety programs. No tape. No tape delay.

There was a connection between the performers and the audience.

I was watching some DVDS of some 50's programs, and there is a certain quality of electricity that is now gone.

In addition, there were local television stations. Now absolutely every station has the same format and same programs. No Ernie Kovacs. No Steve Allen. No John Daly. No Zacherley. No chances. No individuality. And no Edward R. Murrow - that's for sure.

Everything we see and hear is filtered through corporate America and the government they own.

But there is great live teevee! (5.00 / 4) (#8)

You must have missed this segment on the Today Show last week.  No way was it scripted.  Drunk ewoks!

I haven't laffed so hard in a long time.  By the time that Roker apologized to the guest, the lovely lady from Better Homes & Gardens, I had lost it.

that my local TV station (Burlington, VT) is the very last local independent family-owned TV station in the country, so I read.  They're wonderfuly earnest, eschew the dread "news you can use" and the happy talk.  So what if they look like they're dressed by Goodwill and coiffed by their teenage daughters?

I'm not sure if you're being ironic...
but I was not expressing a desire for the good old days.
I was lamenting the loss of an art form.
Writing a new show every week. Then performing it live. And the crew - the direction - the placing of the cameras in the studio...

I was also lamenting the presence of direct communication between the performers and the audience. The intense feeling of sharing something with others.

"Rock 'n' Roll" is still with us. No problem.

    But live television is not.

I read that they are about to release on DVD of a performance by Orson Welles of "King Lear" that was done on live television.
I wonder what it will feel like to see it.

I'm still getting over seeing my ex-Fiance last night on Dancing with the Stars -- Donny Osmond. ;-).

I still remember the day I proposed to his picture.  I took its blank smile back at me as a yes.

We were young.  I was 10.

Years went by and we still hadn't set a date.  Then I learned he married someone else.

THAT BASTID! Not even a breakup, or a kiss goodbye.  What a jerk. My heart broke.

Now every time I see him, the old hurt comes back.

Sometimes it's so painful I have to laugh ;-).

I've moved on, have a family of my own.  But yes, I'll never forget my ex-Fi Donny.

    Oh boy! Ernie Kovacs! I became a huge fan ... (5.00 / 1) (#11)

... after seeing him in Our Man in Havana (dir Carol Reed, screenplay Grahame Greene), as the deliciously snide General Segura. It was one of the best bad-guy turns evah!

How good? He nearly stole the movie out from under Alec Guinness.

After seeing some of his wild stuff on tape and DVD, I think Kovacs actually IS an evil genius!

(I revisit Our Man in Havana as a double bill with The Third Man (another Reed/Greene pairing) and another classic baddie, Orson Welles as Harry Lime.)

    I like Carrie Underwood (5.00 / 1) (#12)
by TeresaInSnow2 on Wed Nov 11, 2009 at 10:42:40 PM EST
She came back to idol one year for one of those "Idol Gives Back" shows.  The judges and Carrie did a photo op in Africa.  Carrie was the only one there who acted like she wanted to be there -- like she meant it.

She either has awesome PR coaches or she is actually a nice person.  I choose to think the latter is true.

Personality of furniture?  Maybe she's just shy.  She is supposedly a farm girl from the sticks!

    Dangerously skinny models are 'hangers w/ legs' (5.00 / 1) (#16)
by Ellie on Thu Nov 12, 2009 at 12:32:25 AM EST
... to designers who are defensive about promoting a body type that imperils the models themselves and those hoping to attain that "ideal". Thin just better shows off the clothes, they say, and it's just a business decision.

If models are just clothes-hangers with legs, does that mean that slave/child-labor interned in designer sweatshops are mere sewing machines with baby teeth?

The one thing I notice about country singers (and Donald - "Country & Western" is so 1975), is that they are, for the most part, all very attractive people.  I think it's a rule - if you want to be a country singer, you have to be very attractive.  Certainly can't say that about hip hop or rap, or even rock and roll.

    Birding notes. (5.00 / 1) (#23)
by Fabian on Thu Nov 12, 2009 at 07:12:55 AM EST
A Cooper's hawk flew across my path and up onto the peak of a roof as I walked to the bus stop.  It sat there for a few minutes, looking around and then flew down on the ground.  A short squeak indicated the end of some small rodent and then the hawk flew off to eat elsewhere.

Cooper's hawks are bird hawks.  They take birds in my back yard from time to time, where I have two feeders set up.  I've never seen one take a rodent before.  I've thought about setting up a barn owl nesting box (huge box, hard to find a good place for one) because of our rodent population.  However, raptors, corvids and owls do not share territories willingly.  We already have both crows and hawks around, so the odds that we'd attract an owl family are slim.

At least someone is eating the annoying critters!

Barn owls specialize in hunting rodents, which would make them very welcome here.

I need to figure out how to mount a large nesting box in our sycamore tree.  Or I could try to convince my husband to mount a nesting box in our garage.  Nifty design.

You should put up a post about this, J. When you wake up, that is. It's 3 a.m. on the west coast, and I'm up paying for my slip from eating vegetarian yesterday -- my innards are rebelling mightily against the burger I ate in a mad meat craving. I think Al Qeada is currently running training camps in my digestive tract. Boy oh boy, never again.

by Fabian on Thu Nov 12, 2009 at 06:56:12 AM EST
My bedtime is 8 pm.  I do have season 1&2 of Buffy on DVD.

In the comic biz, I always ask "Will this come out in trade paperback?".  Because if it will, I pass on buying each issue and wait for it all to come out in one handy volume.  Ditto with television.  I can always catch it on DVD - without paying for cable, TIVO, or DVR or g_d_d commercials.

We're fulla red-tails here, and they're beautiful, but what I long to see and attract are more kestrels. And crows, crows just make me happy.

I think it's a rule - if you want to be a country singer, you have to be very attractive
    .

I think that's true for pop music, too, but I will say that country has been very welcoming to women who don't fit the classic beauty ideal. There are plenty of super-famous country singers who would be considered overweight or unattractive by pop music standards, or even rock standards where the women (if not the men) still seem compelled to be skinny and "hot."
