Anti-Abortion Group Loses Bid to Force State to Issue "Choose Life" Plates

Illinois drivers will continue to drive free of anti-abortion messages staring at them on license plates. The Supreme Court rejected a petition by Choose Life, Inc. to force the state to offer "Choose Life" plates.

The high court on Monday left in place a federal appeals court ruling that state officials were within their rights in trying to keep viewpoints on abortion off of Illinois license plates. Choose Life Illinois, Inc. sued to force the state to issue the plates.

The 7th Circuit ruled it's not a free speech issue, because the plates are issued by the Government. The state government in Illinois said it does not want people to think it is taking a position on abortion.

"Choose Life" plates have been upheld in many states. Only two states have pro-choice plates:

Montana has a plate that says “Pro-Family, Pro-Choice,” and Hawaii has an official decal that says “Respect Choice.”

    ...around here confuse the Columbine plates as being anti-abortion.

    The plates should also say "End School Violence" or something to make it clear.

    ...or "Remember the Children" or something like that.  "Respect Life" is pretty close to "Choose Life".  

    And why is there only an Italian-American plate and no other ethnicity?!

    before the anti-choice people get their way. They are even more forceful than the groups that managed to get all the holidays, the pledge of alliegance, the golden rule, and birthdays removed from public schools.

    all these fancy-schmancy license plates?  

    Normally I'm not a fan of kindergarten-style government, but in this case it might make the most sense to just have one standard issue plain-jane plate for each state, and if you wanna express yourself get a god-damn bumper-sticker.

    are extra money to the state coffers.  To myself it shows the idiots, sort of like the people who walk around with their pants falling down on purpose.

    personalized plates and theme plates kinda funny myself...nobody cares whats on your plate but the police people.
