Sunday Football Open Thread

The game garnering the most attention is Monday night when Brett Favre faces the Packers. I'll talk about that game tomorrow (hint - Percy Harvin comes up.) Today I am picking 5 games, trying to bounce back from my miserable 1-4 week (now 10-10 for the season.) So I am looking for 5 sure winners, and I found them.

Cincinnati travels to Cleveland. The Browns are terrible. Cincy is only a 6.5 point favorite. I think bettors have not yet absorbed just how bad the Browns are. I like the Bengals (-6.5).

When was the last time an 0-3 team was favored on the road? Well Tennessee is a 3 point favorite at Jacksonville. I like the Titans (-3). More . . .

Are the Bears for real? The oddsmakers seem to think so. They are 10 point favorites over the Lions. I don't think the Bears have won a game by 10 points in 3 years. This happy talk seems premature to me (and I think Cutler is great.) I like the Lions (+10).

I love Dallas over Denver today. The Cowboy are only 3 point favorites over a lousy Broncos squad. This is a surprising line - but I am taking the Cowboys (-3).

My final selection is based on the argument that the NFL does not like having 0-4 teams. Miami would be 0-4 is they lost to the Bills today. The line is pick em in Miami. the thinking is with Pennington out, the Dolphins are doomed. I thik the opposite. Pennington was a nice player, but the Dolphins were going nowhere with him. The Dolphins will probably play wildcat half the time. And it is going to work. Watch. I like the Fish (even) to notch their first win.

In non-selection games, I like the Pats, the Raiders, the Giants, the Bucs, the Seahawks, the Jets, the Rams, and the Chargers. (All picks are versus the spread.)

I went, surprise! 3-2 in the college games yesterday, making me 15-10 for the season (I was a bit unlucky as I had the Wolverines (+3) and the game went into overtime.)

This is an Open Thread.

that it will be crazy here.  The weekend has been all abuzz about abounding parties planned in bars, homes, and in the streets.  Huge-screen teevee sales are up, I hear -- amazingly, as if there was a bar or home in this state that didn't already have to deal with that challenge to interior decor.

Monday night, as ever during a Packer game, will be a great time for the few non-football fans to go mall shopping.

I was waiting for all the pre-game Giants fans to get back to their TVs and the church going folks to clear out also. I've gotten stuck in the Sunday rush one time too many ;)

...for this Saturday's game?  He picks the Hawk's to win and they do, he picks us to lose and they don't.

Hence, I'm convinced it's not who the football expert picks, but rather it is my lucky scrubs that really matter.

/debates whether or not to wash said lucky scrubs

Should be just another ordinary, run-of-the-mill classic Big Ten battle.  The kind of game that'll give you heartburn and heart palpitations.

PS  Why are all those teams which have lost one game still on the top 25 list when U of M got dumped for losing a game?  Is that fair, I ask you?  SEC is soooo overrated, or something.

    Yes!

Looks like they more than covered the 10 points, winning by over 3 touchdowns. Sorry about that BTD.

defeat the Seahawks. All these many years living in the Pacific Northwest and I have never taken to the Seahawks. I carry a lifelong allegiance to the Bears, which is almost as hopeless as my lifelong allegiance to the Cubs. Thank the football gods for Peyton Manning and the Colts. I've been a Peyton fan since his days with the Vols and appreciate his winning ways.

    The Bears win!!! (none / 0) (#16)
by caseyOR on Sun Oct 04, 2009 at 07:38:50 PM EST
OMG! The Bears and Colts victorious. And the Bear win was by more than 10 points. I don't have any idea how all the betting rules go, and I am not exactly sure what "the spread" means, but since Chicago won by more than 10 does that mean they beat the spread?

Another Sunday, another college poll. (none / 0) (#9)
by Donald from Hawaii on Sun Oct 04, 2009 at 05:40:26 PM EST
With the eyes of the college football world paying attention after their two impressive victories against Oklahoma State and Texas Tech, the Houston Cougars picked a bad time to play a bad game, turning into roadkill at UTEP, 58-41. They drop out of the Top 25.

Voters once again prove their east coast-centric bias, vaulting Virginia Tech past Boise State despite a totally lackluster 8-point win over the truly hapless Duke Blue Devils. Meanwhile, the Broncos put it into cruise control, rolling past UC-Davis without much effort, 34-16.

And Cal once again proved wrong those preseason pollsters and prognosticators who foolishly persist in placing the Golden Bears in the Top 10, once again performing their annual mid-season lawn chair imitation and getting demolished by USC in Berkeley, 30-3.

One month into the 2009 season, I have to take note of and raise my eyebrows at:

    (1) Stanford, who dumped UCLA yesterday to go to 3-0 in the Pac 10. Are the Cardinal for real? We'll see what happens when they go on the road at Oregon State and Arizona over the next two weekends.

    (2) Iowa, which has looked terribly unimpressive at times in playing to the level of its competition, keeps winning games nevertheless. If history is any indication, the Hawkeyes will either have their balloons popped by Indiana in a few weeks, or they'll march to the tune last danced to by the 2002 Ohio State Buckeyes, who stumbled and bumbled their way to a surprising 14-0 record and corresponding national championship.

    (3) Idaho, the perrenial WAC doormat, gained fleeting national attention at the beginning of the season only for being the team the Washington Huskies beat to end their 16-game skid. Since then, the Vandals have quietly gone to 4-1, coming back yesterday from a 10-point halftime hole to shock heavily favored Colorado State, 31-29. They reside in the same state and league as Boise State, which serves to  keep them off everyone's radar, and that could lead to a few more surprises before the season is done.

    A sure winner, huh? (none / 0) (#10)

    Haaaahaaaahaaaahaaahaaaa!

Yes, a team so "lousy" that they just keep finding ways to win.

My Jets didn't do so well, but the D still looked good and Sanchez (from what I saw, was cooking) didn't seem to crumble and crawl in a corner on a not so great performance.

I actually had your game on for awhile in the kitchen. High 5s to anyone who beats the Cowboys  ;)

Especially at home.  The rookie probably learned a thing or two that are going to help down the road--like avoiding those pesky pick-six's.

Too bad the Raven's couldn't come through today.

Could it be the Saints' year? (none / 0) (#22)
by Donald from Hawaii on Mon Oct 05, 2009 at 12:42:53 AM EST
The law of averages alone dictates that they're overdue for a Super Bowl run. And as you noted, they sure look tough right now. I think they're looking like the best team in the NFC.

...I'd say the Saints and the Giants are the front-runners in the NFC.  One with a great offense and one with a great defense.  Both winning on the road too.

Not sold on the Vikings as yet.  Maybe tonight's game will change my mind of that.

One thing for sure, these aren't the Aint's of old.

2 for 5, if I counted correctly. But seriously who saw the Tennessee loss coming?

What a crazy week! And it only gets better when my Minnesota boys play the Pack on MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL! BTD do me a favor and please don't pick the Vikes... though I'm looking forward to your preview regardless.
