    Data is finite.

That's the concept.  If you don't say anything, the rumor mills (MSM) will go to work overtime, and keep the story alive with every byte of data and every new bit of gossip from real and imagined sources.

If you go out and say "Here is exactly what happened, straight from the horse's mouth." and appear to be as open and honest as possible, then all they can really do is cover the story.

I'm not saying Letterman didn't distort what happened, but it's better for him to be the one to influence first impressions of the story than it is to let the 24 x 7 media do it.

The news reporters have so little mathematical expertise that they publish downright foolish reports.  I even wrote to Dan Balz once at AP over his misuse of statistics in a story and believe it or not he wrote me back acknowledging my response!  Too many people want to use correlational stats to prove causation.  First no-no but so common especially with the right wing.

    Elizabeth Smart (none / 0) (#20)
by jbindc on Fri Oct 02, 2009 at 12:35:38 PM EST
Testified yesterday in the competency hearing of her accused kidnapper Brian David Mitchell.  From all accounts, she was poised and collected.  The details that she testified to were even worse than what was originally reported (and can you believe it's been 6 years already??)

She testified Brian David Mitchell came into her bedroom on the night of June 5, 2002, held a knife to her throat and told her to get up quietly, or he'd kill her and her family.

She said he told her to get her shoes on. When she reached for slip-on shoes, he told her to get some tennis shoes.

She asked him why he was taking her. She said he told her he was taking her hostage and keeping her for ransom. She then said that was a lie.

Smart said Mitchell took her to a camp in the mountains, about three miles from her home, where she met Mitchell's wife Wanda Barzee. Smart said Mitchell took her into a tent and performed a marriage ceremony. She said after the ceremony, Mitchell raped her.

She testified that Mitchell raped her on a daily basis, three to four times a day. She also told the court he chained her to a tree to keep her from leaving.

She said, "There was no actual 24-hour period where he wasn't able to rape me."

She said for the nine months that she was held captive, the dominant focus for Mitchell was sex. She said he gave her alcohol and drugs to lower her resistance. He also made her watch pornography. He said it was to humble her.

She recalled a time when she vomited from too much alcohol, and Mitchell forced her to lie face down in it, saying it would show her "true state".

She said, "Anything I showed resistance or hesitance to, he would turn to me and say, 'The Lord has commanded you to do this. You have to experience the lowest form of humanity to experience the highest.'"

She said he used religion to get whatever he wanted. He would use methods like singing if he couldn't get what he wanted to fool people.

Smart said they moved to San Diego when it began to get cold in Utah, and because Mitchell wanted to find another wife. She said it was in California that Mitchell met a family while he pretended to be an LDS investigator, someone who wanted to learn more about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Smart said Mitchell saw a picture of the family's teenage daughter when he was invited to their home for dinner. She said Mitchell wanted to kidnap the girl, but his plans failed.

She described Mitchell as "smart, articulate, evil, wicked, manipulative, sneaky, slimy, selfish, greedy, not spiritual, not religious, not close to God."

this year and 'way earlier than usual, too.  I had a reaction to the seasonal flu shot and felt like you do.  For me, it went away in a couple of days, and after only one night of high fever . . . but I empathize.  Anyway, I'm hearing this year from quite a few folks who "never get the flu" that they're dealing with it, too.  (And these are folks getting tested for it, as my workplace is one of those asked to test widely to watch for swine flu -- it's the largest aggregate of people in my city, and especially the most likely age group, and my city had one of the highest swine flu incidences in the country last spring.  So along with every other fed agency watching us these days, now we've got the CDC on our case, too!)

shot. People say that the flu shot doesn't make you sick, but the reason for illness after the shot is that your immune system obviously reacts to the shot or it wouldn't give immunity!  So of course it makes one a little sick.

My understanding is that flu this early means probable swine flu, since seasonal flu comes later.

I am currently taking courses at U-Wash, which is possibly where I contracted the virus.

Our campus health center is finding that most cases tested are swine flu, but a significant percentage are not.  It's really quite a mix this year, complicating the task of coping with it!

    My understanding (none / 0) (#69)
by TeresaInSnow2 on Fri Oct 02, 2009 at 07:21:49 PM EST
from the recent outbreak at Washington State University is that it's too early in the season for regular seasonal flu.  Therefore, if you have the flu, it's probably the swine flu.

I currently take courses at University of Wash where they've already got some swine flu cases.  That, along with what I've said above about early symptom onset leads me to assume that it's swine flu.

Thanks for the offer of "virtual chicken soup".  Makes me feel better ;-).  I'd certainly do the same for you!
