Censure The NRCC?

The National Republican Congressional Committee highlighted a parody video of Hitler praising Speaker Pelosi:

On Tuesday morning [. . .] someone at the NRCC posted a bizarre Tweet linking to an altered three-minute section of the 2004 Hitler biopic "Der Untergang" from the conservative site Moonbattery -- with a voice-over of the The Fuhrer ranting about how only Nancy Pelosi shares his vision of health care reform. The Tweet: "Funny Video: Moonbattery: Hitler Reacts to ObamaCare Maneuvers" Hitler, played by Swiss actor Bruno Ganz, is trapped in his bunker with his generals, and rants [in the phony subtitles] about President Obama's revisions to his socialized medicine plan -- and how only he and Nancy Pelosi are still fighting the good fight.

Remember the brouhaha over the video submitted to Move On? And we know the Republicans decided it was Congress' job to censure speech in the past. Logic dictates they should feel the same way here.

Censure the NRCC?

the speech censures itself to all but those beyond help...speaking for me, we don't pay legislators to be the bad taste police.

Just ban twitter. Can't figure out why (none / 0) (#10)

for abuse of a really, really overdone Internet meme.  The joke of adding new subtitles to that particular Hitler scene was arguably funny the first 400 times or so, but it has long since been played out.

Setting aside the offensiveness, it's just sad that someone found this funny in the first place.  It has all the wit and originality of "all your base are belong to us."

This is more of a political question I think (none / 0) (#2)

If I ran the DNC or the DCCC, I would want someone introducing a resolution of censure so that the Media would talk about this.

In principle, I am against the Congress commenting officially, as a body, on speech.

the liberal base gets its rocks off from faux outrage the way the other guys do.  Democrats are seldom interested in playing this game and while I'd like to think it's because they're all serious statesmen, I think it has more to do with the lack of a payoff.

This is why there is an asymmetry between the Democrats, who invariably vote to condemn their own team, and the Republicans, who invariably rally behind the outrage du jour.  How many voted to censure Joe Wilson?  How many voted to condemn Rush Limbaugh's "phony soldiers" remark?  The political dynamic is simply different.

And I agree with you that none of this is really consistent with the spirit of the First Amendment.

...is that it's not a good rendition of the formula.

It's perfect for the Little Hitler's who run sports teams, or try to buy them, or for off the wall frustrations.

IN the UK there's a phrase the "Little Hitler".  It stops short of the war crimes but my god what if that parking enforcer ran things?  Or that benefits processor? etc etc.  My guess is that many of the charmers you find muttering about stuff would be disasters as leaders too.

Should the RNC be using this sort of thing, of course not, but I think it's funny when it's about petty stuff like sports and celebrities.

is so 2008.  Too bad both parties have overused him, because people are now de-sensitized to his horrific crimes.

Censuring them is like zapping the crab monsters with a jillion volts:  electricity only makes them stronger.
