Announcers were talking about graduation rates. U. of Cincinnati graduates 90% of its players. How great is that? I don't think either Oregon or Oregon State even cracks 50%.

I'm with Teresa-- I always vote for staying and, hopefully, getting that degree. My longtime fondness for Peyton Manning began when he decided to return to Tennessee for his final year instead of entering the NFL draft. I would imagine I am in the minority on this, but I think colleges should be required to graduate all their athletes. And athletes should be required to get that degree before entering a pro draft. An unpopular view, I know.

Smack is when you boast and ridicule others.

What I said about UM wasn't smack, it was a common sentiment shared by many in reaction to some UM followers, including my son-in-law, who expect us to feel sorry for him and UM because UM had ONE bad season.

"MSU, being the one-dimensional, choke artists that they are, predictably rolled-over to the Bulldogs"

Of course, I would never say anything like that because dispite my dislike for both MSU and Michigan, they both represent the Big Ten and I want them to do well outside of conference play.

    Really?

I don't have any animus toward any Big Ten team.  The closest is to Michigan and even that is not extended to players and coaches.  Animus does apply to many of their ill behaved wise a$$ followers, tormenting smack talkers who now beg for sympathy. Last year when Michigan beat Florida in the Capital One Bowl,  myself and I know other Spartan faithful cheered because we were happy to see a fine gentleman like Lloyd Carr go out a winner and especially since so many of the aforementioned ragged on Carr for successive losses to Ohio State and chose to ignore his otherwise outstanding record.

mogal...why not buy local?, if you can...especially if you're in a hurry. Also, unless it's free shipping, that cost on-line would be heavy. Secondly, buying locally would support your state, county and local govs with the sales tax. Thirdly. it would support local jobs as well.

If you live in the upper midwest...try Fleet and Farm..good prices.

Shipping costs are horrendous for this kind of thing.  Of all times, this is the time to buy local if at all possible.  You can get a better deal on-line surely, but the shipping costs will wipe that out.

BCS final next year will be in the Rose Bowl, according to ESPN.  If winner of Big 10 (11) and Pac 8 aren't in the BCS final, what happens to the traditional Rose Bowl rivalry?

BCS contract puts tradition on hold (5.00 / 1) (#12)
by abdiel on Thu Jan 01, 2009 at 10:20:44 PM EST
Since the Rose Bowl doesn't get to choose its teams that year, it simply takes whatever teams that the BCS sends to it.

The tradition isn't absolute, the Rose Bowl has simply made it known that if it can, it will always choose the Pac-10 and Big Ten champions.

neither the Pac 10 or the Big 10 has a team in the BCS Championship, then the Rose Bowl will still get those conference winners. The Rose Bowl won't be the BCS Championship. The BCS Championship will be played at the Rose Bowl. Similar to the Orange Bowl being played tonight while the BCS Championship is at the Orange Bowl next Thursday night (okay neither of those last two statements are completely true. It's the Orange Bowl at Joe Robbie/ProPlayer/Dolphins/Dolphin Stadium.

When you get it wrong, you really get it wrong.

So, resolved: anyone who really loves college football would NEVER state that any conference stinks.

Anyone who 'gets' college football would never have a thought like that enter their mind.

    You're clueless.

Big stage.  Explain to me why qualifying Big Ten teams are sought after by the various bowl committees and given prime consideration.

Can't can you.  Because you're clueless. You don't even know what the stage looks like. And you certainly don't know what constitutes respect.

Without the Big 10 there wouldn't be a big stage.

Huge numbers of alumni, the largest number of alumni. Especially in states like California.

Add to that the large numbers of retired people and other expatriates from the north central states in places like Florida and Arizona and there is a major Big 10 presence everywhere.

In fact, there are so many Iowans here in Denver that the most popular sports bar in Iowa City opened up a branch in downtown Denver.  It, in turn, is the biggest and most popular sports bar in LoDo.

It's always packed, wall to wall, with Hawkeye fans on game day.  For the bowl games, there is a line around the block waiting for them to open.  If you're not there two hours ahead of time, you're standing the whole game.  The alumni association has designated another bar in the burbs as an "offical game watch location" because so many people came out.

Old timers like me, who have no patience for standing in line or making the scene, can go to the local pub and watch the game with at least a handful of Hawkeye faithful.

Although they don't have their own campus-like bar complete with banners and pork tenderloins, the other Big Ten schools all have active, well-supported alumni groups.  On the other hand, the South Carolina alumni group has a hard time filling the tiny dive bar by my house.
