    Well, we're rid of the year (5.00 / 1) (#3)

that, in the words of another site, carved a backwards "B" on our hearts.

Driving home from a family gathering yesterday evening, all I could think about was "Thank God I can close the books on this year."  And my family had next-to-nothing to do with that sentiment.

Here's hoping 2009 is better for you, and for me, than was 2008.

But yes, glad this one is over. There are a couple of personal worries I was hoping not to have to carry over, but they are mixed blessings so onward we go, and we'll make the best of 2009.

    Saving the economy (5.00 / 2) (#16)
by Dadler on Thu Jan 01, 2009 at 12:19:45 PM EST
The recipe is achingly simple: pratice radical, compassionate, overwhelming generosity, in all areas of life, with all those you do "business" -- both financial and social.

Money is not a living thing, we cannot treat it like a flock of migrating birds we hope will come our way, it is simply a thing.  Nothing more, nothing less.  A thing.  And until we decide we will use that thing for the benefit of all, until we decide as a people what we want the purpose of money to be, then nothing will change.  Lipstick on a pig time.  Rogaine on a bald eagle.

Overwhelming generosity.  Practice it and be a patriot.

Happy New Year, y'all.  Go Chargers.

Happy New Year BTD and all. (5.00 / 2) (#17)

My only wish is that we are all still around this time next year. Healthy and reasonably happy.

I'm scared about 2009. I'm afraid that the economy will get much worse and that we won't go far enough in our attempts to fix it. This is our chance to get our programs through. Please, please don't waste this opportunity.

I hope there's some good football today and tomorrow. I obviously need something to cheer up about! :)

I believe that there are many of us who share your concerns for the New Year. There are sooo many things happening around the world that will require nothing short of a miracle to turn around.
Here's hoping we keep holding each other up and remain vigilant together!

for the Minnesota Vikings?  Or is it yet another sign of how crappy the economy is?

News item:  As of this afternoon (1/1/09) the Vikings still have yet unsold some 8,000 seats for their NFL playoff game (indoors - so cold is not an excuse) against Philadelphia this weekend.

If they don't sell them by tomorrow (and the league has already given an extension), the game will be blacked out (on newer media as well as TV) in their home area.

I've never been to an NFL regular season game, nor to a playoff game - as a kid, we lived too far away and we weren't a big football family.  It's always seemed too hard to get tickets and, in recent years, the prices have gone through the roof.  Plus, you really do get a better view of the game on TV.

But, this is the first time the Vikes have been in the playoffs in years.  This has got to be absolutely humiliating for the team and, for all owners, scary as all get-out.

It's been repeated over and over that, during the Depression, people still paid for entertainment.  It was something of a misstatement:  they paid for cheap (affordable) entertainment.  The No Fun League may have priced itself out of sight - right now.

They should donate the seats to (5.00 / 3) (#25)

who will make the trip and paint the town green.

Rabid doesn't begin to define the denizens of the late 700 level.

Back in the 70s, when Tampa Bay went 0-and the season, they hosted the Steelers.  Tampa Bay was so bad they couldn't sell out even a fraction of their stadium, so the Pgh fans travelled.  Legend has it that when they came to Tampa, in addition to taking over the stadium, they literally drank the town dry.

a baseball team was talking about offering "lower" priced seats.

I think taking the kids to the movies is expensive and that's just $30 - for a family of 4.  They were talking tickets for $25 per person.  I can go see a play for less than that.

I think they are lottery-ing (is that a word?!) them off. I missed most of the news piece, but it sounded like it was going to be a trend around the city for arts/entertainment.

Would love decent $25 baseball tickets!!

The Met has always had econo-tickets (none / 0) (#26)
by scribe on Fri Jan 02, 2009 at 06:57:09 AM EST
The last time I went there (about 1992), the day/night to go was Monday.  Then, you could get upper level seats (often, SRO which, given that it was Monday, meant there were empty seats you could slip into) for like $15.  Monday night was, for lack of a better name, student night.  You would see students of all kinds of music there watching, often as much for their own education as for anything else.

And the econo student tickets didn't count lower level tickets which the holders had passed on and might be available through the box office.

Kinda like inside gate 11 at the Old Yankee Stadium, if you know what I mean.

blackout rule, when Steelers fans had to go to Youngstown or Wheeling and hope their motel had a Big Antenna to bring in the signal from Columbus, Cincy or somewhere the game wasn't blacked out.  They'd make a weekend of it.  (Something I've heard about and have hazy memories of having happened, but never really experienced....)

Who has the best pardon watch on the web?  I have been checking emptywheel, but wondered who else is paying attention.  It is going to happen, I predict, on the morning of Jan. 20, so that it will be buried in the Obama changeover news, but it is going to happen.  Just wondering how many and who...

I don't recall hearing that, but if he said it, I don't believe it.  Maybe the last of 2008, but I don't believe for a minute that it will be the last of his term.  There are too many Bush people with too much hanging over their heads.

After all, he has his dad's precedent of pardoning the Iran Contra people like Elliott Abrams to protect his own behind.  Why would Junior do any less? I predict he will pardon a lot of people who have lied and stolen for him over the past 8 years.
