Still the Same, Only Worse

The latest ad from the Obama campaign ends by doing what many have asked the campaign to do: emphasizing that John McCain is more of the same. It also suggests that McCain hasn't changed since 1982, although we've seen McCain change quite a bit (all for the worse) this year. That's change we can't believe in.

but what is the subliminal or maybe not so subliminal message about Obama himself that he would even run such a childish ad?

Will this ad be taken by the public as one run by a serious person in touch with their problems rather than in touch with silly & inconsequential gotcha games?

    Email!

Obama and Axlerod are kind of living out their own revision of Thelma & Louise.

and against the "new politics" preached by Obama.  I cannot imagine that this will appeal to the lunch bucket Dems or swing state voters.  It will definitely alienate the older voters for sure.

Will McCain hit back and ask:

"What was Barack Obama up to in 1982?"

He was 21.  They will take it from there...

an idiotic ad. It does nothing more than preach to the converted. What solutions does Obama offer for our country? This ad says: Obama has nothing to offer. The Not McCain campaign has maxed out. It seems that's only worth about 45% of the general election votes. He needs to expand his appeal.

    I'm afraid it's all falling apart. (5.00 / 6) (#4)

This ad will fail.  The only demographic it will appeal to are young voters, WHO DO NOT VOTE IN SIGNIFICANT NUMBERS AND NEVER HAVE.  I will be thrilled, utterly thrilled, to be proven wrong come November, but this sort of snark appeals to the internet-savvy crowd.  Meanwhile senior citizens, most of whom don't know that much about the internet either, are likely to think "WTF is your problem, Barack?"

Meanwhile no issues are discussed.  No important distinctions are drawn other than "I'm young and hip, he's an old fart!" (Guess what? This actually works in McCain's favor.)

Is THIS what Obama said when he promised he'd be "hitting back hard" after 9/11?  Jesus effin' Christ people, Obama's down to a 2-3 point lead in Washington State now.  This is not how you hit McCain.  "McSame" is not how you hit McCain.  You hit McCain on policy, on flip-flops, on the economy, on the war, whatever.

Can ANYBODY here play this game?

If this is a real ad I wonder where they will do the buy?

You'd really have to pick the kind of stations and timeslots where the audience where somehow people cant imagine a president not doing email.

ESPECIALLY since yesterday McCain visited the site in PA where the plane went down on 9/11 and gave a very moving speech....

and Obama sent an e-mail to the locals!

That really makes America see the advantages of being able to send an e-mail doesn't it.....

at how juvenile and stupid this ad is: don't vote for John McCain cause he's a dumb old guy who wore funny glasses and can't send email. Terrific. More ageist ridicule from Team O. With all the issues to talk about, they still want to focus on who's kewl and who's not. It's the effing presidency, not high school.

this is a joke ad, right?  Something to be run only via YouTube and not an actual ad buy because the heights of stupidity this ad reaches is the only impressive thing about it.

So, McCain can't use email?  Many rural voters and people over 65 don't rely on email either.  And he wore bad suits and funny looking glasses in 1982?  So did a lot of other people.

Searching hard for an issue in this that one can latch onto.  Perhaps something that helps voters feel more confidence in Obama helping them on bread & butter (and gas) issues, but all I'm seeing is ... well, stupidity.

And do they really want to point the finger at someone who's been in the Senate for 20+ years when Obama's running mate Biden has been there for 30+?  McCain did little to help the average voter, but the same can probably be said about Biden!

Stay tuned -- since Barack has opened the door -- to commercials detailing how hard the average voter's been hit (especially now!) by Biden's bankruptcy bill which screwed almost everyone except for the Credit Card companies ... who still employ his son for $100,000 a year.
