    We've got some clouds here. Apparently Savannah might get hit by a hurricane.

    going west of NO, putting the city on the worst side of the storm.  This could very easily be worse than Katrina, despite the lower official strength.  Katrina went to the east of NO, which moderated its effect from what it would have been.

    Those of us who've lived on the East Coast know what a big difference it is whether an approaching hurricane stays off the coast or ducks inland so we get that dreaded east side of the storm.  HUGE difference.

    Because of the way the storms rotate, the winds on the east side of the storm are blowing north, so the addition of the northward speed of the storm to those north-blowing winds makes the ground speed of the winds much stronger.

    to create a joint ad for "donations and prayers to those affected by Gustav".  (idea from John Dickerson at Slate)

    Besides helping the folks affected by this storm, it will undercut any efforts by McCain and the GOP to try to use the storm for political advantage.  How are they going to be able to refuse this offer without seeming to be partisan?

    only because of the obvious human cost, but the political fallout will be minimized IMO. The Dems can't use the suffering in an overt way to score points against Bush/McCain, and the Repubs can't say "hey, look at how great we are every four years for about a week!" Trust me, nobody is kidding themselves thinking voters aren't paying attention and vetting the candidates on issues pertaining to this. Ex: who supported legislation for Katrina victims, I even heard finally someone raise the "offshore question". Gas prices down here went up 7 cents BEFORE the refineries were shut down.

    the most damage adn destruction.  They have not dodged the bullet just yet.  That was the pereption three years ago.  

    Aside:  There are three very large shelters set up in Tallahassee Florida for evacuees of Gustav.  Note, they accept no animals.  Here we go again!  So, you drive 6 hours to Tally with your dog and cannot shelter the dog?  I would just stay in my car in some 24-hour strip mall parking lot.

    .."spurting" through the bottom of some of the levees. This is worse than the overtopping by the waves. Its clear there will be some flooding. So far no breaching though but I don't think the storm surge has reached its peak yet.

    Since it's a Fed law now that animals need to be accommodated, I'd be interested to know why they don't and what they are telling people. I know they said during evacuations on Sat that they had 2 lines for buses, pets and no-pets. It seems like one of the 3 shelters at least should take pets. Is there an animal shelter near-by?

    that holes in the levees had been repaired with newspaper strips rather than foam designated for the repairs!

    I'm assuming the project was overseen by the Army Corp of Engineers?

    Good.  That video from a NOLA tv investigation in April was linked here yesterday.  Appalling.  We know already at least one place where the levees are likely to break.

    Wind-driven water was sloshing over the top of the Industrial Canal's floodwall, but city officials and the Army Corps of Engineers said they expected the levees,
    still only partially rebuilt after Hurricane Katrina
    , would hold. The canal broke during Hurricane Betsy and Hurricane Katrina, flooding St. Bernard Parish and the Lower 9th Ward.

    This must be what Harry Shearer is continually trying to bring to the public's attention.
