    I'm sad about men's gymnastics (5.00 / 1) (#32)
by Cream City on Sat Aug 09, 2008 at 10:28:11 PM EST
without Paul Hamm.  The broken hand is heartbreaking, too -- years and years of training, and then bad luck again.  And this time, bad luck he can't overcome.  Good for him for being wise enough to know that and get out for the good of the team, to get another guy in there.

It was such fun to watch our hometown twin boys last time -- heartbreaking as it was then to watch the corruption about his medal.  I was not surprised that he handled it all somehow, as he comes from good people -- I know the family.  I even know the barn that they outfitted years ago as a gym for the twins.  And I recall seeing them when they were little, as one of my kids went to the same Y where they started gymnastics lessons, too.

I'll miss Paul -- but go Morgan!

So sad, with the other injuries, too -- we won't be medaling in gymnastics, it seems.  I watch how hard these athletes work, how much they give up for years, and their families, too.  And then all this.

    Or was it something else?

Still can't get over the fact how Alexei Nemov, the absolute most fabulous gymnast ever, was scored compared to Hamm last time in the Olys..

The audience in the arena booed and yelled for more than 10 minutes straight. Then they gave him a different score ... just a tad better. Everyone went nuts again.

That's gymnstics for you. Just like in figure skating where nobody understands the scoring anymore and the judges are all "under cover" and like always certain athletes are held up.

Nice and cool out (70 in August with low humidity!) so I have a bit of a second wind. Spent the AM doing my "time" as coordinator of our CSA. Luckily it was a beautiful and mild day and there were no melons! We're in peak harvest time, so volume and weight is going up. Turns into quite a workout, lol!~ But the payoff is sure worth it.

I guess I'm just a rooter for the underdog whatever the arena.

I won't say anything more.  Maybe we could have some sort of concord about when it's ok to talk about stuff?  Who's the furthest west timezone-wise?  California?  (any Hawaii/Alaskans on TL?  Don from Hawaii?)

So if you're EST and it's 3 hours after an event, you can talk about it?

ever seen may not match with the rest of yours---but man, Vasily Alexeev was the most impressive athlete I have ever seen, and dominated his sport for years.
He was so strong AND so fast.
You should check out his training techniques; he did some really amazing things.
He was NOT stronger than some of the other lifters, btw---speed and technique were the reasons for his success.

in saber fencing. Yep, two young women from my state won gold and bronze, the first USA medals of this Olympics. We are all very proud even though no one I know has much of an idea about how the event is scored.

Right now I am watching beach volleyball. GW visited with the US women's team today. Saw him trying to serve and posing with the top team, Misty and i can't remember  the other's name.

First off, hats off to the first 3 medal winners. 1,2,and 3 for fencing for the Ladies. Very impressive. I enjoyed the volley ball matches. Then the swimming of course. There are some very very fast swimmers. And the 41 year old female was quite impressive. I also enjoyed watching the Chinese men  on those bars and things . They were incredible.Funny when the one guy just sat down. So far, I would say it is quite enjoyable and the look of pride on any of the winners from any country was incredible. How do those girl swimmers get all that hair under those tiny caps?

get to decide what is a plank and what's not a plank?  If they don't agree with it, they can vote it down but they can't decide it's not a plank.  Once voted down, refer it to some other committee, fine.  But don't try to redefine English to disqualify things you disagree with.

Now we have another committee of the Democratic party which can't follow their own 'rules.'  What is going on there.
