DNCC Reschedules Convention Media WalkThrough

This just in from the DNCC: The media walkthough in Denver that was canceled last week has been rescheduled for Tuesday, July 8 (received by e-mail, no link yet):

The Democratic National Convention Committee will host a media walk-through for national, local and online media outlets, including bloggers, interested in covering the 2008 Democratic National Convention on Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at the Pepsi Center in Denver. Registration and a continental breakfast will be available beginning at 8:00 AM MST, and the program will begin at 9:00 AM. A more detailed itinerary will be distributed to registered outlets closer to the event. The event is scheduled to conclude around 2:00 PM MST.

Please note that the DNCC is not the same group as the Denver Host Committee which failed to fully meet its fundraising deadline yesterday. [More...]

On the differences between the DNC, DNCC and Denver Host Committee:

The Denver 2008 Convention Host Committee is a non-profit organization charged with generating the funding to pay for the 2008 Democratic Convention; organizing a volunteer base; and providing hospitality to delegates and credentialed media. Our mission is to showcase Denver and the Rocky Mountain West, to include all aspects of the community and culture of the entire region, and to emphasize environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable development.

The DNC:

The Democratic National Committee plans the Party's quadrennial presidential nominating convention; promotes the election of Party candidates with both technical and financial support; and works with national, state, and local party organizations, elected officials, candidates, and constituencies to respond to the needs and views of the Democratic electorate and the nation.

The DNCC:

The Democratic National Convention Committee is the official arm of the Democratic National Committee responsible for planning and organizing the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver.

    What's wrong with Denver? (5.00 / 1) (#2)

There are implications here that haven't been fully explained. If in fact the DNC and the DNCC both had trouble raising funds, independently of each other, what does that say about the health of the party's governing institutions and operational commitees, more than that what does it say about their ability to tap into all types of funding mechanisms as well as corporate sponsorships?

    I suspect that (5.00 / 2) (#4)

Obama will end up chipping in for the convention or at least helping out with the fund raising.

As to why the DNC/DNCC is having trouble raising money, I can only speculate that people (including myself) don't really trust them after the mess that they made during the primaries.  I think that people would rather give directly to the candidates.

Could the Convention be moved?  Or is that a non-starter?

    No it won't be moved (5.00 / 1) (#6)

    Zero percent chance of that.

Obama has a solid lead in Colorado (none / 0) (#5)

Obama has never been behind in a major Colorado poll this year--according to polls by Rasmussen and SurveyUSA.

So, no the sky is not falling in Colorado or Denver.  The fundraising will be taken care of.

    I'm not sure I understand how polling (5.00 / 2) (#7)

in Colorado affects whether the DNCC or the host committee has enough money to fund the convention.

Do host committees usually have trouble meeting the money targets?  (it actually would not surprise me if this was true).  Was Denver being especially aggressive in their goal and schedule estimates (maybe compared to previous years)?  Or maybe a lot of people are just tapped out from the primaries.

Someone said the Denver convention was to be all 'green' or as green as possible.  Also, that they were seeking corporate sponsorships.  I'd think the Green thing would be very attractive to most corporations right now, since any sort of Green advertising is fairly successful right now (even for companies that aren't the least bit environment friendly).

... if the convention people are still this much in the red at this point, the city is going to be on the hook for the balance of the funds -- and if that froces service cuts in the city, you could see an anti-Democratic backlash.

That's one of the problems associated with Obama's fabled ability to raise money -- its HIS convention now, and since there is a perception that he is just rolling in cash, its going to be tough to get people to pony up their own money.

that the 'rescheduled' walk through will be turned into a 'virtual' walk-through for the media?

I mean, I'm sure they already have the slide presentations available -- all they need is for someone to walk down the halls with a camera, and then put up a slide of what each room will look like at the convention....
