DNC National Blogger Credentials Announced

I've just been notified by the DNCC that TalkLeft will be a credentialed as a blogger at the Democratic Convention in August. From the e-mail:

Congratulations. The Democratic Convention staff has completed its review of blog credential applications and I’m writing to let you know that your blog will be credentialed at the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver.

We’re excited to welcome so many blogs to the Convention (about 3 times as many as 2004). And we know you’re eager to make travel plans for August. We’ll contact you next week with logistical information regarding housing, credential distribution, and other key details. You probably have several questions. Please be patient – as our goal is to distribute this information to all credentialed blogs at the same time.

I'm very excited TalkLeft was selected. As one of the credentialed bloggers for the Boston DNC in 2004, I know how exciting it is to cover the convention live and to be in the hall during the evening speeches. [More..]

As background, a few weeks ago the DNCC named the 50 state bloggers (1 blog from each state that concentrates on state politics)for the convention.

Today the DNCC selected the national, niche and video bloggers who will be credentialed.

Here is the DNC announcement. The full list of credentialed blogs, including the 50 state bloggers, is here. As for what we get:

Organizers also announced that blogs credentialed by the DNCC will have access to a dedicated "Blogger Lounge" inside the Pepsi Center, equipped with televisions, technology resources and workspace to facilitate their reporting. All bloggers will have access to the Convention floor, press briefing areas, caucus meetings, filing centers and other auxiliary events open to members of the media.

Bloggers should know that credentialing isn't the only way to cover the convention.

A group of Denver-based organizations is creating this blog-friendly media center near the Convention site. “The Big Tent” is a project of ProgressNow, the Alliance for Sustainable Colorado, The Wright Group and folks at Daily Kos. This media facility will operate throughout the week of the Convention just a few blocks from the Pepsi Center. You’ll need to sign up to receive information and access to the facility.

.... DailyKos, ProgressNow, the Alliance for Sustainable Colorado, and the Wright Group invite you to "The Big Tent" in Denver! The Big Tent will be your blogging / new media home away from home throughout the Democratic Convention, conveniently located within walking distance of both the Pepsi Center and the Convention Center.

Participants in The Big Tent will enjoy a WiFi-enabled, air-conditioned blogging/new media lounge, "The Big Stage" with some of the most well known faces in the non-profit and political world, as well as food, drinks, entertainment, and much more. For more information on The Big Tent in Denver, click here.

DKos and Progress Now are arranging for bloggers who don't have credentials to the Pepsi Center to have access to everything from a site a few blocks away. It's an effort independent of the DNC and a huge undertaking. They are to be complimented and praised for doing this.

I'm sure I'll be spending a lot of time there as well as there are many special events planned and it will be a blogger hangout place.

Make sure you see other places in Colorado. Colorado Springs might be a nice day trip.

A bit OT but Dan Abrams just said something funny. He just said he only heard about Fr Pflieger today--as a result of FOX. This is a political editor for MSNBC. And he really never heard about Fr Mike?  This is hard to credit on the face of it. He's been IDed as a liability for months by bloggers.  A highly paid  editor beaten by bloggers?  Who'd a thought?!

Back to the topic.  It would be cool if some nobodies could be on the floor and gallery.  It's likely to be a spectacular event this year.

    Heh.

Really though, it goes to show, besides the fact that the DNC has great taste in bloggers, that you can keep your integrity and still be a credentialed blogger.

This is a well deserved honor for Jeralyn and  it is a credit to the DNC that they picked a blog that features one of its most vociferous critics.

Congrats Jeralyn. and good show DNC.

I'll try to get some info about the protests during the lunch break of the RBC meeting.  Howard Wolfson was asked tonight by Andrea Mitchell why there have to be protesters disrupting the meeting.  He was quick to point out she was assuming without basis, that the protesters intended to be disruptive, and that he had no reason to believe they intended to do anything more than exercise their 1st Amendment rights.

since its something that you want -- and you will at least (hopefully) be covering the convention from the "legal blog" aspect.

But I have to say two things....

In general I don't really see the utility of all these bloggers.  The 50 state ones I get, but by and large we're looking at a blogosphere version of four days of media types deperately looking for a story that isn't there.

The other objection I have is that the DNC is credentially sites like DK and Americablog which have become little more than hate-fests for the CLintons -- the kind of disrespect shown to a former Democratic president, and the ugliness and outright misogyny toward the first woman who has a serious shot at being the nominee, is NOT something that the DNC should be credentialling.

The other objection I have is that the DNC is credentially sites like DK and Americablog which have become little more than hate-fests for the CLintons

and there are plenty more that serve as anti-Clinton hate-fests.

I really appreciate all the support of our readers. BTD and I work really hard at this blog and to know you will be reading our primary coverage is very gratifying.

I can hit the mute button on the mainstream coverage and not have to deal with a media that I expect will be even more out-of-control than it is now.

I will get fair and factual coverage right here - and that, in my book, is priceless!

    Way to go, Talk Left!

    Congratulations, and thank goodness ... (5.00 / 2) (#82)

... we will have access to inside information from a trustworthy source. I'd hate to be decoding the MSM's reporting to figure out the truth about what is going on.

Since there will probably be so many angles to cover for one person, maybe you will be able to share some of the reporting work with a few other independent-minded bloggers who are not just rooting for Obama?

    Congrats (5.00 / 1) (#86)
