    "I'm with the Bush-Cheney team, and I'm here to stop the count."

    Those were the words John Bolton yelled as he burst into a Tallahassee library on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, where local election workers were recounting ballots cast in Florida's disputed presidential race between George W. Bush and Al Gore.

      I sort of chronicled this at the time, and some interesting articles remain at the Florida Butterfly Ballot page.  Some general, highly-detailed articles linked near the top are still available and very interesting if anyone's intrigued after seeing the movie.

      Also near the top is a photo of the confusing ballot that caused thousands of voters from a Jewish community to wind up voting for Pat Buchanan.  You can click to enlarge the photo.

      And, linked below that is a flash-presentation of what it was like to try to figure out where to punch the right circle, from the viewpoint of someone standing at the voting booth.  You click to turn the ballot page and then click on what you think will chose Gore.  Click on 'DONE' to finish.

      The bungling of that ballot alone more than counted for the 500+ votes that Gore lost by in Florida.  About 19,200 ballots were thrown out due to double punching etc.

    sorry I'm piggy backing.  I thought I would post this here from a commentor on ABCNEWS.  NJMOM wrote this in reference to sexism and the Ferraro article:

    You know, it's columns such as this one that only serve to further solidify my resolve to never vote for Obama. I have been a loyal member of the Democratic Party for the last 32 years, I have held my nose more times than I can count to vote for the democratic nominee; no more. I have had enough and it's time to take a stand. I find it despicable that once again women are being brushed aside, called all sorts of names and treated as children. Unbelievable that it's coming from the members of my own former party. Using Roe v. Wade as a blackmailing device to get our votes is disgusting and ridiculous. Look at some of Obama's biggest supporters, look at his good buddy Casey from PA. No, that supposed threat exists with an Obama presidency as well. Perhaps more so, who knows? We obviously know very little about this candidate, his views, his background, his experience.
    It is time for women to walk away from this abusive relationship with the democratic party, it is time women took a stand for their daughters, for their grandaughters, for their mothers and sisters and for themselves! This is way bigger than a primary, a single candidate or even the general election.     I see the campaign has begun to discount the Puerto Rico primary so if Hillary wins the popular vote PR shouldn't be included because they can't vote in GE.
    Despite the fact that they have been apportioned 55  delegates vote.

    I would just point out that:
    Probability of Democrats getting any electoral votes in November from PR = 0
    Probability of Democrats getting any electoral votes in November from Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Utah combined  = 0 (all of the above were won by over 30% margin by Bush). So let's also remove their delegates and popular votes from the calculations.

    I am so sick of them treating this like a game. If he thought he was going to win, you can bet those votes wouldn't be in question.

    I find it difficult to believe that Kerry, Kennedy, Dodd, Edwards, Byrd, etc. can possibly be blind to the manipulations.

    The only thing that could be keeping those Democrats from standing on principle is they are somehow part of the manipulation plan.

    The popular vote in Puerto Rico is immaterial. Delegates count. Popular vote is only a talking point to persuade superdelegates to support one candidate over the other. The size of the popular vote in a territory without electoral votes is a weak talking point. I doubt that any superdelegates will determine their ultimate vote based on that outcome.

    To clarify, the possibility of getting Democratic electoral votes out of Puerto Rico is zero. The probability of getting Democratic electoral votes out of Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska and Utah is low. But just as importantly, in those four states we have the opportunity to support down ballot races for the state legislature and the US Congress. A candidate who can maximize turnout in those states is important to the party even if electoral votes are elusive.

    that democracy is about the will of the people.  The primary delegates and the electoral college are just the tools we (unfortunately) settled on to relect the will, they're not the principle itself.

    PR's President is the the POTUS, why shouldn't they get a say?

    But part of the reason the anti-PR talking point is silly is because it's just the timing in this particular primary that allows people to think it's a valid argument.  If PR had voted in March, and say, Montana put her over the top, would anyone, even His Hopeness, seriously argue that they should go back and take PR's votes out of the count?  Seriously?

    I know it's a sore point, but I still want to know where BTD got the info for his first post (at 4pm EST, on 5/23) about Hillary's RFK remarks. He had reached a a decidedly negative perspective, and was calling for an apology from Clinton, right from the git go. But he didn't reference any source; nothing but a link to the TPM video on YouTube.

    I'm flummoxed by how he reached those conclusions based on just the video itself. There's got to be a back story.

    • 50 ml rye whiskey
    • splash of simple syrup or 1 cube (3.6 g) sugar and just enough water to dissolve it
    • 2 dashes bitters
    • Old Fashioned glass

    'old-fashioned' drink recipes were more complicated and labor intensive? People used to take their drinking more seriously back when there was a requisite daily cocktail hour.

    Which reminds me of the other ongoing subject of movies: Todd Haynes' remarkable period piece, "Far from Heaven" (a remake of Douglas Sirk's "All that Heaven Allows"). Those folks knew their way around a cocktail.

    I'd like to mix things up a bit this summer with some interesting cocktails. There is a New Orleans Best Cocktail series on YouTube with some good videos. I am intrigued by the Singapore Sling.

    I asked my brother, who had been to Singapore many times, to give me a list of "don't misses" for the afternoon and evening I would be there en route to Viet Nam.  His list included a Singapore Sling at the Long Bar at the Raffles Hotel.  Tasted a lot like a whiskey sour and all the tourists were drinking them and taking each others pictures.

    good quality, clear spirits are generally more purified than anything that has any color i.e. white rum vs dark.

    Get this: I also read that you can purify low quality product by running it through a Brita filter. Well, as an experiment, I did it with a good vodka (Iceberg made in the Canadian province of Newfoundland) and it came out with no taste at all - like water. But my water tasted like vodka for days. I don't know what that says about Brita filters (or me).

    Drink the clear rum and you end up with the 'Rum Monster' the next day, but no hangover.

    Rum Monster= feeling a tad loopy, but happy and no ill effects.

    brings back bad memories for me. As a bartender back in the 80's, slings were a popular drink with a youthful and less than socially sophisticated crowd. A rash of sling orders meant no tip. We even referred to bad tippers in general as "slingers".

    Another was the Sloe Gin Fizz, which tastes a lot like carbonated cough syrup. Go figure.

    think "mulling mint is hard work". In Cuba they used that lemon concentrate stuff instead of fresh lemons to make Mojitos. I figured it was because growing lemons (a fairly non-edible fruit) would be a waste of resources.

    variety I've had on site in Cuba. One of the advantages of part-time residence in Canada: get to go to Cuba, hassle-free.

    In terms of architectural style, newer parts of Havana look like old Miami. Havana being more dilapidated from lack of repair to hurricane damaged structures. Old Havana looks a bit like New Orleans' French quarter, but with more majestic public buildings and residential stone structures.

    Seemed like everybody in Cuba was college-educated, at least those who were involved with the tourism industry. There's no element of 'servitude' in the attitude there. Made friends with a young man who was overjoyed to see that I was reading Michael Moore's "Stupid White Men". He hitch-hiked to the airport to say goodbye and I gave him the book (which he couldn't get there). Unforgettable.

    refuse to pay for television that is NOT supposed to have commercials.  I was a teenager when cable first hit.  The PLUS was supposed to be commercial-free.

    I will just have to wait for the DVD.

    On the flip,  Judge Judy is HILARIOUS!  Just watched a video where a man had to sue his son.  Great theatre.  JJ plays it up nice for the cameras.  I love her!

    "fingernails on a chalkboard".  I think that JJ is a lot like Hillary.  You either like her or you don't.  No middle ground.  I watched her profile on 60 Minutes that came out in 1993.  MAN she was ONE tough cookie in the NY family courts.

    She was reviled by the juvenile courts because she made SO many people within the system accountable.

    Sore spot Psst!  :)

    Less Than Zero is not really a bad flick, and it is good on the substance abuse issue, but Hollywood mangled and nutrasweeted the story for the movie.  If you've never read the novel, I would recommend it (you can read it in almost one sitting), with just one proviso:

    Wait until after the Primary, especially if BHO wins, because this book will depress the Hell out of you and afterwords we may never be able to find you.  LOL  Really, they basically paid Bret Easton Ellis for the title and a few character names, other than that it's all whitewash.

    That said, you're right, it is a good anti drug tale, so it has utility there, I just hate when Hollywood sterilizes books for film so it hits a sore spot, nothing personal.  

    Don't know about movies, but "Intervention" on A&E is pretty good.  Maybe you can find "Reefer Madness."  LOL

    I warned you.  Seriously, when I finished the book it left me not so much depressed but...empty I guess is the best way to put it.  I read a couple of other of his books too, the most infamous being the Serial Killer one (now THAT was a pretty good take on the book, much, much better, the freakin' name of the book/movie escapes me now for some reason, probably repression :)) and I always ended up feeling the same emptiness.  He is really good on bleak, he really make you feel it.

    Robert Downey was really good in that role though, the one really bright spot of the whole film.  Except for James Spader as Rip, he was the only one who "got" it as far as the vibe.

    Robert Downey Jr. is the poster boy for the subject at hand isn't he. He was good in the recent Diane Arbus bio-pic "Fur" with Kidman.

    Also like other films about low life and high living, especially one's that involve the music indstry: Todd Haynes' esoteric "Velvet Goldmine" and, on the other end of the spectrum, Cameron Crowe's "Almost Famous" (that one is sappy but I'm not complaining). Was a tad disappointed by the aging groupie flick "The Banger Sisters" with Goldie Hawn and Susan Sarandon. But still, I think aging-groupie-chic is an inspirational persona.

    Speaking of Sarandon, anybody seen the May/December edgy romance flick "White Palace" with her and James Spader? It's a lot about socio-economic class conflict; he's an attorney, she's a waitress at White Castle. Hot. "Boston Legal" is absurd, but I like to watch Spader be the uber-perv.
