Hillary Clinton On Olbermann's Countdown Tonight

By Big Tent Democrat

Here is an interesting development; Hillary Clinton will appear on the Obama News Network's Countdown program with Obama's O'Reilly, Keith Olbermann.

What approach should Clinton have in that appearance do you think? My view is she should come in prepared to discuss only issues. Presumably, Olbermann will have the guts to say to Clinton's face the awful things he has said in his broadcasts. IF and when he does, I think she should go aggressively against him. Be prepared to critique him and his network's atrocious journalistic performance. Picking a fight with the Media, especially NBC, on the eve of the PA election would be smart imo.

I truly don't believe he's got the b@lls to confront her directly.  However, I'd love to see her turn it around and throw a few things at him and see if he's got the cajones to be a man and try to defend himself.

(sigh)  I hope he's not gonna be on the pre-game for the football shows this fall.  I'd hate to have to change the channel and them miss kick off.  Here's a thought:  He can cover Arena football!  Yeah...THAT's the ticket!

Olbermann will probably think he is reenacting the Edward R. Murrow interview of Joe McCarthey. But, he seems to be not-so-tough when he's actually facing the person he's been maligning. Plus, I have a feeling that if Clinton gives him a few compliments he will be too distracted by his own ego to go after her hard.  The worst thing she can do is be over-confrontational with him.

I knew he slanted the news against Bush, but he was the only major cable channel that was exposing the Bush scandals, and I loved hearing that. I suspected it was just a ratings grab, but I wanted to believe otherwise. I wanted to believe that Olbermann really wanted to be a reporter like Murrow. Then he posted on dKos a few times, along the lines of "I really don't hate Obama", and then he started going hard against Clinton. He even did one of his infamous "special comments" about her. I cannot imagine what Clinton has done to earn his ire, but it's one thing to attack a President who is as deserving of attack as Bush, and another entirely to take sides in a Presidential primary. No love left, just a deeper cynicism about what the media are capable of.

No one will ever be able to say that Hillary is afraid to face anyone or anything; she doesn't whine, and she doesn't pout - she just deals with whatever comes her way with confidence, intelligence and courage.

Olbermann was always fawning over Bill. He had him on his show a couple of times and acted like he was sitting before the king of the world or something. He had Bill on after Chris Wallace interview on Fox, remember when Bill got red-faced?

and shutting down freedom of the press, blah blah blah.  Just watch -- he'll allude to "pimpin'" and ask why Chelsea doesn't give interviews.

She'll handle it, so we'll be proud of her for it -- but Obamans will be giddy about his questions, no matter her answers.

If Clinton is on both Countdown and then Larry King, and Obama is radio silent, then Clinton will be in a great position going into Tuesday.  I wonder if Keith's planning on having Obama on as a surprise.

Just had time to see the SUSA thread where it seems Obama is closing in on Clinton.  Since what seems to be driving this is the relative percentage of white versus AA voters, I gather Clinton is betting that Countdown will help push up the white voters in PA.

    It's probably a mistake. It's his turf, (none / 0) (#55)

and he'll have an army of producers controlling everything from mikes to lighting. He'll be a total creep, and there will be no chance to give a brilliant Clinton / Gore press conference. Bill and Al are the most knowledgeable on any subject and a delight to hear. Hillary is more timid about it, this culture being less forgiving toward bold women. But I will so miss their beautifully precise and flawless reasoning. Compare that to Obama's vague ramblings filled with abstractions, bad causality, and illogic.
The business tonight will be a scandal. The msm have gotten away with all their shallow smears, and there's no reason for them to back off now.

What Keith Olbermann will do: "Show that he is Worse than George Stephanopoulos"

What Hillary will do: "Show she is better than Barrack O-bama; and in a better position to win the WhiteHouse."

Give Hillary a last minute push.. Contribute or Make Calls

I strongly recommend Keith Olbermann to take this QUIZ before the interview to straighten his facts!

She has courage.  She just doesn't flinch, does she? I don't think she's going to go at him hard because I think one of her goals will be to show him what others have found engaging & surprising about her when they meet her in person (I'm recalling that clip of how she treated Chris Matthews on one of her campaign stops when he asked why she wouldn't do his show).  That said, I think she will make her point about the media coverage and won't hesitate when handling any 'tough' questions he sends her way about her campaign tactics or perceived gaffes.  I think she's trying to draw a contrast between her demeanor and Senator Obama's (as seen in the last debate) by staying cool, competent, and in command of any situation regardless of how personally uncomfortable it is.  IOW, she's trying to appear presidential.

I predict she will own him by the end of the segment.  He's got a streak of bully in him and will fold when confronted directly.

It may even pay off for her, although the effect will probably be negligible since KO's ratings are not the greatest.

I haven't Countdown for awhile, but I can't remember KO ever giving tough interviews.  Most of the guests on his show already agree with him.  Keith's specialty is rants, not face-to-face confrontations.

She is probably doing both interviews (none / 0) (#71)

She's had practice with bigger fatheads than KO, she'll use it to demonstrate that you can speak respectfully when you disagree. Se showed on Jon that she can laugh at herself, and she'll show on KO that knows more than he does about team sports.

She turned Richard Mellon Schaife around, maybe KO will see the error of his ways, too!  Hey, a girl can dream can't she??

And yes, she is one strong, courageous woman - isn't this what we want in a president, someone who can go into a tough situation calmly and diffuse the animosity?  Every day, I am more and more impressed with her.  Every day I know she is the one I want leading this country, not uot of a cult of personality, but because of her tremendous abilities.  There hasn't been anyone this qualified to run for President since, well, Bill!!

Clinton needs all the help we can muster, especially since Obama is outspending her by zillions of dollars (and if she still wins PA, will people finally admit he cannot win the big states Dems need?!?), so if you can help out, please do!

I think Hillary should be both utterly charming and substantive; she should respond to KO's questions without defensiveness or anger; whenever she's angry, her anger is read as inappropriate aggression. And, we all have been criticizing Obama for reacting to the unpleasant questions thrown to him last week either with aggression or defensiveness or by belittling the questioner.

For what it's worth, I think Hillary should avoid responding in a way that parallels the opponent's manner of response that her camp has criticized.  Everyone knows Hillary is a fighter.  What she too often hides are her great charm and her affect.  She has also been criticized for months now as someone who is divisive and partisan, but she has rarely emphasized in debates how much important legislation she has sponsored and gotten past through bi-partisan efforts.  I think she should emphasize this tonight if opportunity presents itself. I'm sure her campaign staff can come up with some of the many quotes of Republican Senators complimenting Hillary and her bi-partisan work in the Senate.

I'm baffled that Clinton is willing to do this.  There is limited upside (she's comfortably ahead in most polls) and the potential downside is the destruction of her campaign at the hands of Olbermann/MSNBC.  Something doesn't compute.  There's no question that she's couragous ... but she's also not reckless.

One thing about Hillary:  She loves "the sting of battle".  I read that somewhere.  Like the great generals in history, she's happiest when she's mixing it up with someone.

    So I think she will:

    1. rivet him with her gaze
    2. laugh when he starts sputtering
    3. tell him calmly that Ferraro said what Obama had ALREADY said himself (and that Bob Johnson of Black Entertainment Network has recently reiterated)
    4. tell him to f'ing lighten up and get a life.

    It's going to be glorious!

Keith actually complimented her a few times.  Said that the Repubs were unfair to the Clintons during the '90s and that she aptly called it a "vast right wing conspiracy".  They really had a nice back and forth.  She answered the questions beautifully and even got a couple very subtle digs in.  He asked her about whether she thinks the media had been sexist and she talked about how both Obama and her candidacies are historic and that the remnants of harsh descriminatory times would show up and that they don't represent her or Obama's views.  She said "you've reported on some of them on your program, Keith."

So gracious.  She implied that his special comment was "reporting".  Ha.
