David Shuster's Offensive Remark: Chelsea Clinton Being "Pimped"

By Big Tent Democrat

We all know NBC is the Obama Broadcasting Company but this is ridiculous:

An apology from Shuster is in order. Immediately.

[Update TL: Shuster suspended. This thread's closing, please comment further at new one. Thanks.]

who made a bad choice of words.  It happens.

"Pimpin'" has become common street slang, and can simply mean putting somebody to work for you.  Mike Huckabee is pimpin' Chuck Norris, McCain is pimpin' Rudy, Obama is pimpin' Oprah.

Everybody is so sensitive these days...I swear, some people wake up everyday looking for a reason to get offended.

    Parent

    Nonsense. (5.00 / 1) (#108)
by Cream City on Fri Feb 08, 2008 at 09:59:09 AM EST
First, common street slang can stay in the streets, not on what purportedly is a news show on a major network that uses the public airwaves.

Second, you are ignoring the societal connotations of the term -- and the fact that the term was not used for all those others you list above.

By your definition, it's okay then to say you're pimping your sister, your mother, your daughter?  And did you ask them?

my sister or my moms out on the street to raise money for me...so no, I wouldn't say I'm pimpin' them.  If I did, I could and I might.

Besides, it would take a lot more than that to offend my moms or my sister...they aren't thin-skinned, they're NY tough.

I said it was a bad choice of words, especially for a network broadcast.  He has apologized.  Personally, I don't mind street slang on the news, but that's just me, I'm a street guy.

I know you guys are especially offended because it's directed at your candidate's campaign....but there is truth in the statement whether you like it or not.  I mean can you deny that they all pimp and they all whore?  Be offended that they singled out your candidate if you must, but don't deny there is a whole lot of pimpin' in politics.

Nobody likes to be called a whore or being told they are being pimped...but it can be true.  I'm whoring myself for my boss right now...and you could say he's pimpin' me.  I haven't offended myself with this observation.  Has anyone even asked Chelsea if she was offended?  I'd bet she's laughing it off with her mom right now....

No doubt there is sexism alive and well in politics and the media and every other part of life...racism, agism, and every other "ism" too.

Yet I think there are a lot of people who bend over backwards to find the "ism's", and make mountains out of molehills.

It's a beautiful thing that we are this close to having a woman or a black man be president (though I'd prefer a different woman or black man)...but we can't start walking on egg shells because of it.  I don't want sexism or racism to become such a hot-button that people hold back legit criticism for fear of being labelled sexist or racist.

In a nutshell....we are all a little too thin skinned, and people go looking for offense with a little too much zeal, imo.

They feel safe because not only does the corporate/Clinton hating media find nothing offensive in anything whatsoever that is said about the Clintons there is also a ho-hum response from much of the left side of the blogosphere that seem to hate the Clintons with the same kind of fervor.

Any respect I had for the likes of Schuster and Olbermann is gone because they are no more capable of fairness than FOX or the Right Wing Talking heads on the radio.

I stopped listening to Air America Radio long ago when it became apparent they were Air Obama too. I don't need pundits or radio or cable "news" to tell me what to think. I can do that quite nicely by myself, thank you. What I want and need is for all of the above to just give me the facts and to report things in a fair and balanced manner.

MSNBC was always tilted towards the dimwitted what with having Tweety and Tucker the Misogynist Twins but Schuster just entered Limbaugh country with that remark.

I think we should all write to MSNBC and demand
that David Shuster be suspended - exactly the
way people reacted to Imus.  They showed us the
way --  Why is it that any remark that Bill
Clinton makes is distorted by MSNBC to be racist
and, yet, the most blatant, sexist remark can be
made toward the Clintons and is ignored.  Shuster certainly did not make the same remark toward Caroline Kennedy.  I have stopped watching MSNBC
because this kind of thing goes on from 6:00 a.m.
and all day and evening.  Perhaps it has something
to do with the meeting Obama had with Jack Welch
not long ago.  Chris Matthews was the one who
first brought race into the campaign.  The night
of the NH primary he was so upset with Hillary's
win that he said the polls were wrong because of
the Bradley Effect - and Jesse Jackson, Jr. followed up the next day and then it steam-rolled.
Hillary is only going to win if her supporters
realize they have to fight for her.

Pimping an object is the definition you have given above!

The reason you would destroy a competitor by telling them they've been pimped  would be that they've been  denigrated by comparing them to a common whore. In a misogynist and patriarchal society like ours, that is a low blow.

The Clintons were absolutely crazed about protecting Chelsea's privacy when she was a minor.  She was almost never seen on the campaign trail.  Remember that poll in 1992 where most people didn't even know the Clintons had a child?   And early on in this campaign there was a joke that everyone wanted to hear her speak because they'd seen her photo, but had never heard her say anything.

I can see some folks having a problem with minor children being used on a campaign trail as props (I don't think that's occurred with  the Obamas), but why on earth is there any issue about an adult woman campaigning for her mother?

This stems from a couple of things - the press is angry that they aren't getting access to Chelsea and, of course, the usual Clinton hatred.  Because Hillary Clinton's daughter wouldn't want to campaign for the cold frigid witch that is her mother, she must be being forced to.  Ugh!

It's not a nice place AT ALL if you aren't into Obamamania.  It's a mob scene.  And the powers that be don't care.  Some even feed it.

Go here: MyDD diary link.  Scroll down and search for "redwine".  You'll see a number of posts from expatriots of the orange who basically sum up the fact that they have been "scared away" by the goings on at the orange.

    The feelings are justified.

If you like MarKos, maybe it would be a favor to him if you'd tell him about all the badmouthing from people who've had to leave.  Because I have a feeling that the expatriots are the ones he wants around once Obamafever is gone.

rules.  But, are you reading the diaries and comments at DK these days?  My opinion:  enforce a "no slam of DK" rule, but, on the other hand, don't commend those diaries and comments either.  I'm hoping susang's new position will help there.

time to settle down with a good cup of coffee and go to work in my home office.

i sent marie coco an email last night thanking her for an article she wrote on clinton. i received a rather odd response. she said it is a difficult time for clinton and the democrats and clinton needs to win states fast. upon considering her comment, i think she meant win more delegates and shut this primary downn.

David Shuster is going to offer an apology for his remark today on the Tucker Carlson Show.  Too little too late IMHO

if I were the Clintons I'd go to one of all the other countries in the world where they are highly respected and popular and leave America to the mess it's going to keep devolving into. I just wish I could go with them.
