Are  you  suggesting,  BTD,   that  since  Jeralynn  can't be  found,    that  YOU  will fill in  the  "female" topics  like  Brangelina  and  the  Oscars?

I'd  like  to  be  the  first  to  say  Jeralynn's  posts  are  quite   erudite   and intellectual.    Never  seen   her   post  anything  on  Brangelina.

    Tut,  tut,  BTD.

    Parent
    I liked it okay. (5.00 / 1) (#11)
by Maria Garcia on Sun Feb 24, 2008 at 06:45:00 PM EST
I thought that the performances were quite good, and it was suspenseful to watch...but for me it wasn't exactly food for thought. Few films are nowadays.

I am not against the depiction of violence in art, but I don't like gratuitous violence. In my opinion, the violence in this film was appropriate, certainly not glorified and and since characters that you actually grew to care for were victimized by it wasn't romanticized.

by BrandingIron on Sun Feb 24, 2008 at 06:46:28 PM EST
has really put everyone into a cynical mood for the Oscars this year, plus everyone's preoccupied with the primaries.  The Oscars SHOULD be a distraction, but right now we're going to watch a movie on DVD.

Yesterday we went to WonderCon (a better distraction from the political mess here/everywhere) and Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway were there...they should be at the Oscars tonight.  It was nice of them to show up for us, as they were promoting the new Get Smart movie they're in (looks really funny!).

I like Atonement, but No Country for Old Men is getting the big buzz for Best Picture.  Personally I think Michael Clayton would be the upset and Juno is the longshot.  Juno was the "cute" movie, but it sure stretched when it came to real life logic/dialogue.  So with this one I think No Country for Old Men will win the Best Director nod for the Coen Bros.

I think Best Actor might go to Daniel Day Lewis.  I would LIKE to see Best Actress go to Marion Cotillard, but then again I didn't see the Julie Christie movie and I hear it's really good.  I saw Elizabeth:  TGA and while I love Cate Blanchett, I think there was a tiny bit of disconnect between the first Elizabeth movie and this one due to her unseemly scenes where she freaked out over the whole affair...the first movie was superior.

I have no more opinions about the rest of it...I'll read about it tomorrow.  :)

I liked the first Elizabeth movie also but (none / 0) (#14)

skipped the second one.  Blanchett is a terrific actress.  Did see Tommy Lee Jones in Valley of Elah.  Quite a good movie, but I've read that movies on Iraq/Afganistan wars aren't pulling in much of a crowd.

but was she in that death penalty movie, David Hale or something?  With Kevin Spacey?  It had the opposite effect: made me want to kill myself.

I am dying to see the Savages, though I am waiting for the right mood.

In the Valley of Elah was fabulous--and it wasn't really a war movie.  More like a thriller wrapped up in a character study.  Tommy Lee Jones was fabulous, but for me, Susan Sarandon really stole the show.  She was on screen maybe fifteen minutes but you felt every single second of it with her.  Charlize Theron was pretty darn good, too.
