Monday Morning Open Thread

It's cold in New York. I'm going to Florida today. J is not available today. Hopefully, TChris will be.

Corrente is organizing house party discussions on health care. Health care geeks are encouraged to add their thoughts to the discussion.

From the TalkLeft diaries, lilburro is still on the torture beat, discussing Biden's statements on prosecutions. Dalton Hoffine, like me, does not think much of "experience" in politics. Jacob Freeze finds some humor in the "oversight" of the TARP bailout.

This is an Open Thread.

    Rove's IT guru dies in mysterious plane crash ... (5.00 / 1) (#43)

... before he could testify about the 2004 election fraud in Ohio:

I don't usually reveal sources, but I think this is incredibly important. Michael Connell died in a plane crash last night. He was a key witness in the Ohio election fraud case that I have been reporting on. More importantly, however, he had information that he was ready to share.

You see, Mike Connell set-up the alternate email and communications system for the White House. He was responsible for creating the system that hosted the infamous GWB43.com accounts that Karl Rove and others used. When asked by Congress to provide these emails, the White House said that they were destroyed. But in reality, what Connell is alleged to have done is move these files to other servers after having allegedly scrubbed the files from all "known" Karl Rove accounts.

Based on how the economy is I feel Obama should not have a fancy party for his Inauguration like all the other presidents have had.  How much money is actually  spent on these all night parties anyway?  Is it taxpayer's money?  Anyway I think Obama should rule by example and show just how different he will  be and he can start with scaling down the inauguration expenses, especially when we are practically in a depression.

I believe that the inaugauration committee is sticking to the standard menu on this celebration..the basics with one official ball.
The rest is all outside of their control. I agree that anything that is beyond the basics should be cut out...tough times in America..but all these other balls are not put on by that committee,I believe.

As far as people coming to see it, not sure how you would tell citizens not to come..would seem undemocratic to me.

I was reading an article yesterday about more and more people abandoning their pets due to the recession. It is terrible. I spent a couple of hours on pet finder yesterday looking for a suitable addition to the family. Though I don't know that they will want me to have a dog if I admit to not walking the one I already have! In my defense my boy is happiest on the bed or on the couch. The only time his feet touch the floor in the house is when he is running from the bed to the couch and vice versa or when he has to eat.

and I think it's getting worse. Groups are starting up to do long term fostering until families can settle and take their pets back.

Not every dog wants a walk ;) Some are fine on less activity as long as their weight stays in check. My parents just recently adopted a beagle. They found one around 4yrs old that the rescue thought would be best with a retired couple who was home more and were looking for a lap type dog.  They walk her a bit, but not daily and my niece takes her out on occasion also. She's perfectly content to just be by my parents side all day :)

I guess I wasn't clear. He is extremely active BUT all his activity is concentrated above floor level! He plays on the bed and then there is usually a manic dash to the couch where he will play for a while followed by a leap across to the loveseat and then back to the bed. I would really love it if he was content to be by my side all day... :-)!
He loves his walks but not if it is raining. The cold does not bother him (he has a really dense coat), it bothers me!

    Tale of Despereaux.

I swear the whole movie's an allegory about the drug war and the war on terror.

Main part of the story is a kingdom that bans soup (no soup for you!). And the voiceover says something about how ridiculous it is to ban something that's part of nature, or some such.

And then the main character, Despereax (a mouse) gets ostracized for not buying into the fear and cowering that all good mices must believe in.

Kate DiCamillo, the author of "Tale of Despereaux: Being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup, and a Spool of Thread", is a University of Florida graduate with an English Major who found herself wandering low end jobs after graduation not being successful as a book writer but knowing it's what she wanted to do.

Thirty years old and working in a book warehouse in Minnesota, she submitted a manuscript for a childrens book soon to be known as "Because of Winn Dixie". Next thing you know she has movie deal contracts for three of her writings and pockets a Newbery Award.

in downtown Portland yesterday and at least 4 more inches today. We have broken a 40 year old record. Massive drifting; cars stuck in snow drifts; I-84 closed; Hwy. 26 from Portland to the Oregon coast closed; temp right around 20 degrees; airplanes neither landing nor taking of.

We are buried. Last week snow and ice shut down most of northwest Oregon; now it's record snowfall. We don't have the kind and numbers of snow removal equipment found in the midwest. Main streets will eventually get plowed, but side streets and residential areas must wait for it all to melt.

    Nobody is going anywhere.

my a@@ off shoveling out my mini-van and putting chains on it. I drove to Fred Meyers to break the cabin fever and the place was packed. On the way, you could barely tell the road from the snowbanks. Now my trees are snapping in half because of the snow and ice. They were fairly mature 8 yr. olds that will be hard to replace. Like I said yesterday, this isn't supposed to happen in Portland, at least not like this and to last this long. Whatever happened to the silver thaw?

I tried to take my Schnauzer for a walk and she sunk out of site in the snow. This weather is tuff on a 14 year old dog. And then, when I threw her into the back yard this morning to pee, after plowing around and looking for a suitable spot, she finally settled on the patio. I guess its better than the living room carpet.

what part of town are you in? The west side is, as usual, a mess. I'm in NE, closer to Grant HS. So far, no trees or tree limbs have fallen. My car, my little Toyota, is buried halfway up. I don't think I'll be driving for awhile. Tomorrow though, I must venture forth on foot to replenish my supply of coffee. Snowed-in is one thing; no coffee is something else entirely.

Probably not much consolation to you right now, but this is our worst winter storm since 1968. If it only happens every 40 years, I guess I can cope.

As an aside, I put off buying new tire chains for too long. I just heard Mayer-elect Sam Adams on the TV telling me that everyone in town is sold out of tire chains.

Oh, and more snow due on Wednesday, but temps up to 40 degrees on Saturday. Let's hope the melt-off is slow or we will be following this mess with flooding.

Glad to hear that the tree snapping thing hasn't occured there. Snow and ice are sliding off our roof even though it's still below freezing here. It obliterated the Gazebo in our back yard.

Good Luck with the coffee. Alot of the stores, coffee shops and restaurants are closed on this side. Although, my Daughter lives near Stumptown on Division and walks for coffee, so it all depends on where you live.

WHEN Carol Chomsky arrived at a kibbutz in Israel with her husband, Noam, she wanted to drive a tractor or work as a mechanic.
"The kibbutz wasn't quite ready for that," she once said. "It was way before there were even words for women's rights."

Carol, who went on to become a prominent linguist and educator, didn't mind getting her hands dirty.

"She could fix a car," said a sister-in-law, Judith Chomsky. "She was mechanical. I mean, she was the one who fixed everything at the house.

"She was very athletic, and until she became ill, was fishing and water skiing and doing things people wouldn't normally associate with her. She played the accordion."

Carol Chomsky, a Philadelphia native who was a nationally recognized authority on language acquisition with a special interest in how children learn to read, died of cancer Friday. She was 78 and lived in Lexington, Mass.
