Obama's Grandmother Died

Barack Obama's grandmother died. He took a break from campaigning to visit her a little more than a week ago.

"It is with great sadness that we announce that our grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has died peacefully after a battle with cancer," Obama said in a joint statement with his sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng. "She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility."

Rest in peace, Madelyn Dunham.

was responsible for raising quite a man, no matter who you think should have been the nominee.  I think that throughout the campaign, even those of us who were for Hillary felt that Obama would be president someday.

To be that terrific a parent or grandparent, to encourage the things that built a president is something of which we should all be in awe.

and believe only psychopathic personalities want to be president...I wouldn't be too proud of raising a psychopath:)

All half-kidding aside, so sad for Obama and his family.

in spite of her illness, she knew what her grandson has accomplished and I hope she took some measure of credit for the man he has become.

What a bittersweet time for Barack Obama and his family.

It would have been wonderful for his grandmother to know that he won the election & perhaps even have lived to see the inaugural.  It seems as if she was so very instrumental in his upbringing, education, & character development.

My heart breaks for the senator & his family, especially the little girls.

    May she rest in peace.

My grandmother died of cancer 8 weeks ago aged 85.    I still pick up my car keys to go and see her and then realise she isn't there. Those of us who get to have our grandparents well into adulthood are very fortunate; the flip side is that it really is a huge blow when we eventually lose them.

    A bittersweet time, indeed. (5.00 / 0) (#26)

Let's each dedicate our respective journeys to the polls tomorrow in her memory, that we may secure her legacy and do her proud.

I'm here in Las Vegas with my family, getting ready for tomorrow's GOTV effort, and the city is chomping at the bit. Turnout looks to be heavy, and preliminary estimates are of an 80%-plus turnout.

And another sad postscript to the campaign: (5.00 / 0) (#29)

We just received word a short time upon returning to our hotel that Barack Obama's Nevada state director, Terrence Tolbert, died early this morning of a massive heart attack. He just spoke to all of us on Saturday night, as the campaign held its initial GOTV meeting for all out-of-state volunteers.

Now, I'm motivated to work all the harder. Let's bring this home for those who went before us.

It will be a bittersweet victory for Obama because his grandmother won't be there to share it.

cruel irony. Yes, she was the rock of the family.
She was the worker, the plugger, who rose from secretary to VP of the Escrow dept at a major Hawaii bank thru hard work and dedication, not education.
I think it is safe to say many of Obama's best attributes came from her. And that without her in his life he would not be where he is right now, poised to make history.

Thanks,Madelyn Dunham, for guiding this man thru his formative years. Godspeed,Grandma Dunham.

It looks like they locked the thread at freerepublic.com after removing a ton of comments that were apparently even more heinous than some of the comments that remain.

    I don't understand people sometimes.

I can't imagine the mix of emotions Obama is going through right now.

I just read a story that her absentee ballot was received on the 27th and met the conditions to be counted.

So it's nice that she voted for him.
