The New O'Reilly

Now beyond parody, Keith Olbermann. Good gawd. Does NBC have no shame anymore?

This is an Open Thread.

The thoughts on Olbermann are solely my own.

We are gathering the family tommorow night to watch the returns.  I need a good, not too expensive bottle of champaigne, and I am personally clueless about such things.

If it doesn't work out, I'll save it for New Years.  But I hope to be opening it tommorow.

I am preparing for lots of "loud noises" in my neighborhood tonight, one way or the other - I don't imagine I will be getting much sleep.

by baked potato on Mon Nov 03, 2008 at 06:53:09 PM EST
is the one called "Extra Dry."  The "more dry" is the type called "Brut."

To help get your head past that linguistic bind, think of the words "extra dry" in the case of Champagne as meaning "beyond" or "outside-of" dry (i.e., sweet).

At least that is how it was explained to us some years ago by an experienced tour guide at the late, lamented Hans Kornell winery on Larkmead Lane in Napa County, whose made-in-the-bottle Champagnes were startlingly good. Which I took as testable evidence that the tour guide knew something whereof he spoke.

American and German Rieslings these days are generally dry to off-dry, especially the German Kabinett-level and equivalent Austrian and Alsatians.

The "higher" (more expensive) levels are generally sweet dessert-type wines.

A bottle of chilled German Kabinett is a perfect refreshment on a hot summer afternoon with friends.

I say this because I've shifted my focus to wondering about how Obama will govern (not that I wasn't thinking about this before, but it's sort of staring us all in the face now).  He is already afraid of disappointing people, so he says, but IMO he hasn't even promised that much.

in today's NYT: (l) in an op-ed article by Robert Rubin and Jared Bernstein on economic and fiscal advice for the next president, the following was, curiously,  sort of slipped in to an otherwise straight forward presentation: ".."we could improve our personal savings rate and expand retirement security by establishing some kind of individualized account separate from Social Security, financed  by an appropriate revenue measure". Not real sure of what they meant, but if this is the failed Bush idea (Wall Street still wants to get its hands on all that money), the timing is not the best, especially for Florida voters.  (2) On the editorial page, Carol Giacomo reports on a disturbing study underway by has beens Bob Dole, Howard Baker, Tom Daschle and George Mitchell to devise policy solutions both parties might embrace on Iran's nuclear weapons ambitions, including (maybe even especially) a military option.  Hopefully, this is just a retirement gig for these guys to secure foundation funding for "bipartisan policy development", but it does not smell too good.

he needs to dial it back from "Eleven" so he can be heard.

And he needs to recognize that the first few of his "Special Comments" - where he was restrained, logical, and incisive - were far more effective than some of his later rants.

You can accomplish a lot without shouting, not the least of which is reminding people that you can communicate in a tone other than shouting.  When you do that, you tend to succeed.

After all, when was the last time Obama shouted?  McSame?  And who's more effective?

As to election night returns - assuming I make it home - I'll do like I did (unintentionally) in 2006.  That night, my cable system lost sound, and I zapped around and found the boys at Faux were up all night bemoaning their and the Rethugs' fates.  The expressions on their faces - without sound - were worth the price of admission.  Especially when you consider that one of the movie stations was airing this silent classic at the same time.  The faces and expressions on the one station were almost as scared and scary as the faces and expressions on the other.

For toasts - keep it light.  You don't want a hangover Wednesday, because there will be a lot of work to do.  I'm going with a nice bottle of Radeberger in a nice glass, I think.

Then he started with the "Special Comments" and the show quickly switched from mildly entertaining to pure demagoguery.

by his own sister network and takes it in good humor. What would O'Reilly's reaction be? He would blow a gasket. I watch both and O'Reilly clearly is the more irrational when criticized.
Sure, KO has a big ego also, but he has can poke fun of himself, something rarely seen in O'Reilly.

As far as a news anchor doing blogs...KO is not an anchor. He is an opinion pundit. O'Reilly is on the radio everyday..what is the difference? Hannity,Dobbs..a bunch of them are on radio and get much more aggressive in that medium than on tv.
KO can be obnoxious,no doubt, but when no one else on TV was pointing out that the emporer had no clothes, KO was hammering the Bush administration. That earns him some credit in my book.

you have to give him something.  As I wrote before, he's certainly moved into the realm of self-parody.  But I don't think we can ignore what went before.  KO made some positive contributions to the discourse before he lost his mind.  Look back and find me a critical voice like his when he started.

I'll grant he's certainly become self-indulgent, but that's the potential pratfall that awaits anyone given a platform.

Every one of your posts is the constant theme of how everyone was unfair to the clintons, and KO is just part of that group.
Olberman is a commentator, not a "serious news" reporter.  The plain fact is that I (and it appears most everyone else on this subject) had no idea what your issue with Olberman was.

He commented on the McCain campaign being absorbed with zinging KO rather than winning the election?  I'd comment as well.
