This just in, via Daily Kos, Hillary's new statement on Iraq.

As General Petraeus prepares to testify before Congress next week, it is clear that the increase in U.S. troops in Iraq has simply not led to political reconciliation in Iraq. Rather than continuing the escalation, we must begin the immediate redeployment of U.S. troops out of Iraq, in order to end this war as soon as possible. I continue to support legislative efforts requiring the Administration to begin to withdraw our troops and to complete the redeployment of combat troops in 2008, and I encourage the Congressional leadership to ensure that we will have an opportunity to vote for such legislation.

The President continues to reject the findings of the National Intelligence Estimate, the Government Accountability Office report and the Jones Commission report, refuses to work with Congress to develop a strategy that will enable our troops to start coming home, and stubbornly denies the reality on the ground and the will of the American people.

We will continue to press him to follow the will of the people. I will continue to do everything in my power to convince the President to change course and to work with my colleagues in the Senate to bring an end to this war as soon as possible.

Throw in newly gifted "cover" from conservative Democrat Ben Nelson of Nebraska, and suddenly you have a situation that is less about "moderate Dems versus the anti-war Left", and more "Americans want out in overwhelming numbers, and Congress must heed the will of the people."

Clinton's leadership will be critical to forcing Bush into accepting a supplemental bill with real teeth. We're off to a good start.

She needs to lead defunding the war. Not just a vote but take a position for cutting off funding of the war and funding a complete withdral.

Sure, it's nice that now she's coming around, but I still think it's taken her waaaaayyy too long to admit what a damn debacle the whole thing is and to call for an end.

My poor, normally upbeat heart has been blackened and scarred with this administration, and it's democratic enablers. I listen, I look, I mull and come to the conclusion that I just can't trust the democrats to do the right thing anymore.

Maybe, just maybe, if I scrounge around in the corners of my soul I can scrape up enough optimism to become hope, but it's going to have to be fed some action to keep it alive.

And the rest? And the private army of mercenaries? And the bases? Another supplemental to pay for it all? Work to develop a strategy? Enable troops to start coming home?

All I hear so far is someone worried about votes next year trying to quiet and co-opt opposition to the occupation.

all the Democrats would do the right thing and unite in ending as quickly as possible the slaughter and destruction, it would be celebrated worldwide. It should be plain to all that there is no political office worth enabling Bush's assault on civilization.

set aside their own misinterpreted self interest and simply refuse to pay for something they say they do not want, even, no... especially, in the face of the risk of losing their seats, I think it would be only a temporary political setback for each of them.

I think that if they did it they would become instant heroes to nearly the entire country, and could win any election they chose just for the asking.

But they're blind to the fact that what they think will perpetuate empire may in reality cause it's fall:
They are afraid that the US economy cannot and will not continue to dominate the world economy, and will collapse, unless the US is able to dominate the energy resources of the world, and that cannot be done if the US withdraws from Iraq.
The invasion and the occupation of Iraq was not done to deliver 'freedom and democracy' to Iraq. It was done in the hope of ensuring US economic dominance.

Clinton and Durbin came out clearly in support of swift withdrawal from Iraq.

For the last two weeks many Netrootalites are crying wolf claiming the the Democrats are going to fold. Even the commenters above seems already Pavlovly react by say "too late, not enough" and such. Adriana Huffington performs an act of mathematical acrobatics claiming that the cards are in the hands of the Dems, which using simple arithmetic is simply not the case.

We are not at the gate to the promised land, but as Markos says: it looks promising.
