Tuesday Open Thread

I'm off to drive to this lovely prison on the other side of the state, away from the mountains, towards Kansas.

Here's an open thread for you.

In the diary rescue department, check out this new one on the Move-On ad by veteran Michael Gass, and Scribe's on Larry Craig's motion to withdraw his plea.

I'll be back tonight.

    A day to remember 9/11/2001 (none / 0) (#1)

9/11/2001 was a tough day for all Americans.  I'm sure we all remember where we were when we heard what had happened.  These NORAD recordings always bring it home for me.

getting ready for work when CNN started showing the shot of the hole in the North Tower with commentators speculating on what kind and size of plane had hit, whether it was some freak accident, etc., etc.

I remember thinking it seems really unusual that CNN would have a camera set up in their financial offices aimed at the WTC that was able to give them that kind of angle... and also thinking there would be little tolerance in future for protests against the WTO...

I turned the TV off and left for work, still not having heard much of what had happened at all. By the time I got to my office both towers were down, and the rest is history now...

Officials: Bush to Announce Troop Cut

[President Bush will tell the nation this week he plans to reduce the American troop presence in Iraq by about 30,000 by next summer, but will condition those and further cuts on continued progress, The Associated Press has learned.]

i'll wait for the cliff's notes version, it should be roughly equivalent to the actual depth of the speech.

my, my, such angst over moveon.org's ad! and here i thought gen. patreaus was such a "straight shooter". well, except he's not.

alas, generals in democracies can't afford to be "straight shooters", lest they be fired. it is, after all, a very political position; with rare exception (maybe in time of national emergency), you don't get a star by rocking the boat. it's the nature of the beast.

while "betrayus" might be a tad harsh, it isn't far off the mark.

    unveilled in his hometown.

New Almaden is a community of about 300 people, and many of them had a hand in creating the stone and bronze monument. The bronze plaques were made by a local, and the town's unofficial mayor got permission from the county to use the land. Another resident built the monument's brick foundation.

"Pat lived in New Almaden for most of his life," read part of the monument's inscription. "He came to love it for its history and community spirit. He roamed the hills with his brothers as a kid, then hiked and trained in them as an athlete and a soldier."

Tillman's mother, Mary Tillman, said the gathering Saturday -- held amid the community's annual festival featuring a parade and games -- was "perfectly Pat."

    What a loss.

Fran Townsend dismisses new bin Laden tape as "diversion" from remembrance of 9/11 victims

To paraphrase her recent remarks on CNN, Osama bin Laden doesn't really matter, his words are irrelevant, how dare he impose himself on our 9/11 grieving, what an insult, he's a coward.

Some quotes from the thin limped Queen of White House disinformation, CNN interview.

"Al Qaeda as an organization is incredibly powerful."

And who is responsible for that Fran?

Her reply to Wolf's question about sleeper cells within the United States,

"There are certainly cells that we're aware of."

Apparently the White House is holding off on arresting these terrorists until after they attack, just before the election, at which point they'll hold up the Constitution and its protections as the reason why they couldn't act sooner. The Republican campaign to abolish civil rights will follow shortly thereafter.

Big quake hits Sumatra, warning issued
A powerful quake measuring 7.9 has struck near Indonesia's Sumatra island, triggering tsunami warnings in Indonesia, Malaysia, north-west Australia, India and Sri Lanka, officials said.

Indonesia's Global TV reported that several buildings in Padang, the capital of West Sumatra had collapsed, while Metro TV reported that some buildings had caught fire.

The US Geological Survey said the underwater quake hit at about 6.10 pm (2110 AEST) and was centred 105 kilometres south-west of Bengkulu on Sumatra island at a depth of 15.6 kilometres.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a tsunami warning for wide areas of the region.

"Earthquakes of this size have the potential to generate a widespread destructive tsunami that can affect coastlines across the entire Indian Ocean Basin," it said, warning that waves could hit Indonesia and Australia within an hour.

Sri Lanka and India could be struck within three hours, it said.

A preliminary tsunami warning has been issued to residents of Christmas and Cocos islands.

    (Update4):
The earthquake hit at 6:10 p.m. local time at a depth of 15 kilometers (9.3 miles), the U.S. Geological Survey said. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the quake's magnitude was 8.2. The Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency lifted its tsunami warning after danger of damage from the waves passed.

The temblor was less powerful than a 9.1 magnitude quake off the coast of Sumatra in December 2004, which caused a tsunami that devastated coastal communities in countries across the Indian Ocean, killing more than 220,000 people. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said today's quake generated a tsunami that may "have been destructive along some coasts."

Norman Hsu received 40 million dollar loan from investment firm run by former Woodstock organizer. Stunningly, it seems there may be a problem collecting on the note.

What kind of idiot loans 40 million dollars  to someone without verifying the legitimacy of the business or the background of the principal?

there was a very detailed investment plan for manufacturing clothes in China for Gucci, Prada, etc. The money was not Rosenman's personal money but that of his capital venture firm.

The part I didn't like was the post-dated check part, but I don't know anything about investment capital deals, perhaps that's the norm.

can write words on paper. Reading words given to you by the person seeking the funds and accepting them at face value is not verification.

The fact that Rosenman used other people's money in addition to his own to make such an incredibly foolish deal hardly inures to his benefit-- as I'm sure many of his investors will agree.
