Principles

Via Kevin Drum:

Tuesday night Sanchez said she could not support the [anti-Iraq Debacle] protesters because the $145 billion in Iraq war funding was in the same bill that would provide money to build the C-17 aircraft in California. "I never voted for this war," she said. But "I'm not going to vote against $2.1 billion for C-17 production, which is in California. That is just not going to happen."

Rep. Sanchez, you just said you were going to vote for the war, so that a California company will get a defense contract. 395 Californians have died in Iraq. Loretta Sanchez can put a price on their lives - 2 billion dollars. Not to mention the damage to the interests of the nation.

But I have a solution for Rep. Sanchez, maybe she has not thought about it - how about NOT putting Iraq appropriations in the bill?

What a disgusting thing to say. I have much more respect for Republicans who support the war than for this drivel from Sanchez. Outrageous.

I still haven't figured out if "Dems" like Sanchez are simply idiots, cowards, cynical, or complicit...or perhaps all four?

The US Air Force has itself requested that production be stopped and no new orders placed for this particular transport, and yet certain members of congress (curiously all from CA and MO, where these planes are made) along with Boeing, of course, have continued to push for its continued production.

Sanchez is making quite clear that she puts the interests of her corporate donors above that of her constituents and US troops and interests. I see no other way to read this, especially in light of the above. If she doesn't come around on this, I see no reason for her to remain the party's representative in congress for this or any other seat. Yet another argument for primary challenges and ethics reform.

This is intentionally supporting the occupation of Iraq.

The only stupidity she is displaying is some possible stupidity in believing that people are too stupid to see through her.

Unfortunately most (outside of here) won't.

Especially the constituents who will benefit from $2.1 billion for C-17 production.

That's what her district elected her to do.

in the LA Times article that BTD did not quote:
Sanchez, Orange County's only Democratic member of Congress, voted in 2002 against giving President Bush authorization to invade Iraq. More recently she voted to begin pulling troops out within 90 days.
Sanchez has switched from voting against funding the Iraq occupation to voting for funding it, while excusing her switch by saying that
she could not support the protesters because the $145 billion in Iraq war funding was in the same bill that would provide money to build the C-17 aircraft in California.
I wonder what percentage of the population of her constituency is opposed to the occupation? The LA Times article has nothing to say on that point, but based on national polling it is probably between 55 and 70 percent.

How much Boeing contributed to Sanchez' last year? Was it worth the lives of a few thousand American soldiers and a few hundred thousand Iraqis?

    Last Aug 28, 2006:

LOS ANGELES - Boeing Co. said Friday it will begin shutting down production of its C-17 cargo plane, the last to be built in Southern California, because Congress has not funded new purchases.
    ...
Production could be restarted if Congress approves funding, which could happen as early as next month. But restarting the supply chain would be costly and add millions of dollars to the cost of each plane -- about $154 million each.
    ...
The C-17 plant is the last major airplane factory left in Southern California, which once was a center for aircraft production.
    Biography for Loretta Sanchez
Sanchez is the ranking woman of the House Armed Services Committee.
    ...
This year, Congresswoman Sanchez was selected by Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi to serve as the third-ranking Democrat of the Select Committee for Homeland Security
