NY Times to End " Times Select" Wall

Just the other day I was complaining that a New York Times editorial opposing the death penalty referred to an investigative article by its reporter Adam Liptak that was behind its "Times Select" wall and how the wall prevented the excellent article from getting out. I wouldn't link to it because people couldn't read it without paying.

The New York Post reports today the Times is ending the "Times Select" wall and all of its content will be free.

Smart move.

Until they do here's a useful trick that often works.

If the article you want is behind the wall, google the first sentence (put it in quotes). Often there is someone else who has posted the entire article, and sometimes it is also at another url at the NYT.

Also sometimes a link on a google search result page to the "walled" article is recognized by NYT's system as a "subscriber" and lets you read it.

    but that sounds like stealing.

Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.

Of course I have stolen music in the past so maybe I should just keep quiet.

THe Times select was a stupid move. I am sure that their advertisers have been screaming ever since they pulled that foolish stunt.

Yesterday the paper got smaller not in pages but the page size was reduced.

The Swamp is one good one. The wires like AP, Reuters, etc, are other sources. McClatchey is still there.

All the sources that NYT and CNN use are still out there. NYT does publish original investigative work but the people they pay to do it can work for others as well.
