FISA Amendment: Dem Leaders, Don't Do It

This seems insanity to me:

Under pressure from President Bush, Democratic leaders in Congress are scrambling to pass legislation this week to expand the government’s electronic wiretapping powers. Democratic leaders have expressed a new willingness to work with the White House to amend the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act to make it easier for the National Security Agency to eavesdrop on some purely foreign telephone calls and e-mail. Such a step now requires court approval.

How many times can the Dems be rolled on this? I hope the Dems are just kabuki-ing this thing. And there is only one hopeful sign that they are in this article:

One obstacle to a deal this week is a disagreement between Democrats and the White House over how to audit the wiretapping of the foreign-to-foreign calls going through switches in the United States. The Democrats have proposed that the eavesdropping be reviewed by the secret FISA court to make sure that it has not ensnared any Americans. The administration has proposed that the attorney general perform the review, but Democrats are unwilling to give that kind of authority to Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, who is under fire for what some lawmakers describe as his misleading testimony about the dismissals of federal prosecutors and the wiretapping program.

(Emphasis supplied.) There is no way that Dems can give in on this point. Trust Gonzales? On anything? Simply insane.

I'm sorry to clutter up the commentary with this Dem bash. It only seems knee jerk because this latest genuflecting to their Republican Palace overlords occurs so often and with so many separate situations.

I figure that I'm entitled to that, after a decade of supporting the party that's (ab)used my franchise to toss to right wing crotch-sniffing rottweilers to shred as sport.

As an Independent, I've opened up huge chunks of day and daylight simply ending my endorsement and enabling of people who should know better, behave better.

If they can't even see their way around demanding that existing FISA law be obeyed rather than gutted to make illegality LEGAL, they neither deserve my support nor the understanding that I not bash them while they're genuinely trying to get something done in a tough environment.

I want Dems that are UNBOUGHT and UNBOSSED -- not these sorry sacks of shite.

Bush succeeded in scaring us whole to death. Now, The Terrorist is hiding behind every corner and every electronic exchange. This is bull. The danger of terrorism is real but the probability is low. Decent and traditional police (including FBI) work can take care of it without need to spy on everyone and their mother.

Surely to God the Democrats cannot be this stupid, craven, or whatever the hell it is?  Do they think there is some public outcry to give this pack of thugs MORE unchecked power, LESS oversight by the courts????  They cannot possibly actually believe that.  So, WHY?  Why even consider it?

Support for Congressional Democrats has been steadily dropping due to their unwillingness to take the fight to the White House and their hiding behind the "we just gotta get us one of them veto-proof majorities, doncha know!" excuse.  If they actually HURRY UP to pass some more authoritarian BushCo crap, I really cannot imagine what that is going to do to the base and to independents who have increasingly gone from thinking Dems are the only alternative to thinking there is no alternative at all.  Caving to Bush on this would be completely nuts.
