Summer Reading

Many TalkLeft readers will be interested in Unchecked and Unbalanced: Presidential Power in a Time of Terror by Frederick A. O. Schwarz Jr. and Aziz Z. Huq. According to the NY Times review:

[T]he book serves as a valuable compendium and chronicle of the Bush administration’s aggressive efforts to expand the power of the executive branch, providing a detailed account of the unilateral actions it has taken on matters ranging from torture policy to domestic surveillance, and it is necessary reading for anyone interested in how those efforts by the Bush White House have tipped the constitutional system of checks and balances.

This book, "Unchecked and Unbalanced," is published by the excellent, nonprofit house, The New Press.  I think a lot of TalkLeft regulars would find many of TNP's titles interesting.  Folks looking for gifts of intellectual merit for themselves or others might want to browse their list.

...for using the government as his plaything is none other than F.A.O. Schwarz. ;)

But seriously, I don't think enough time has been spent on gaming out how exactly this extra-Constitutional expansion of presidential power will affect the political scene for the next few decades.  Unless we start amending the Constitution to explicitly ban the practices now enjoying presidential precedent, this is going to be something that crops up again in a subsequent administration, and I'd rather find a way to avoid that if possible.
