The Wackos of the Beltway

Glenn Greenwald writes a great post that delves into how the Media has been the decider of who is "sober and serious" and who is a "wacko." Glenn exposes yet again how little intelligence and information the Media actually possesses and how the "serious and sober" designees are anything but. His discussion of Joe Lieberman's appearance at the insane John Hagee's church and the speech Joe delivered there is required reading.

But I do think Glenn is missing one very important development in this all - it is something I have been talking about a lot this year - the irrelevance of the Media and the Beltway Elite in the shaping of public opinion on the issues of the day. Any reading of public opinion polls demonstrates that the Media pundits and Beltway Gasbags have been utterly tuned out by the American People. From Hiatt to Broder to Ignatius to Brooks to O'Reilly to Klein to whomever you wish to name, their impact on public opinion has dropped to near zero.

They are enraged by this development and they have taken to attacking Democratic leaders like Harry Reid in overt and brutish ways in reaction. But as Reid's letter to Fred Hiatt attests, he is not worried nor is he listening to the Media or the DC Gasbags on this. He has figured it out. They are irrelevant now. How this process has occurred is not entirely clear yet. But I am convinced it is true. See also this post from Markos on "the fair fight." I think the irrelevance of the Beltway Media is central to this development.

significant.  After that I believe that it is what so many in middle America are going through with their healthcare that has caused them to ignore major media outlets and their chosen spokemen.  My Aunt belongs to an HMO and constantly has to settle for less effective cheaper prescriptions to treat things.  It has been something she has been dealing with now for about five years total as she and my Uncle age.  They both work hard, always have, they pay for healthcare coverage and then they settle for what they can get.  Doesn't add up to the land of milk and honey in their eyes so what the gasbags write about doesn't add up for them either and they use the newspaper to line the catbox with and search for their answers elsewhere.

The gasbags hitched themselves to Bush and his narrative. It turned out to be utterly false.

... not in a confinement situation, surfing haphazardly by to check the weather, or, in the case of a family pet, pausing after having accidentally sat on the remote control to do some perfunctory genital maintenance?

    I think not!

It is a good point. Even MTP has lost its strength.

The Beltway Gasbags no longer have as much control of the symbols (mostly words) that affect the people of the nation. Bloggers have taken a lot of that control, liberal television and radio media some more, news media of other nations (particularly Britain, Canada, Australia) more still, etc.

One especially long overdue wresting of control has been by scientists, who always had the capacity but did not recognize it. Non-scientist friends of this trend include Al Gore, Christopher and Dana Reeve. The trend is still, unfortunately, a weak one.

Liberals were/are accused of wanting us to lose in Iraq, take tons of flack for it.  Meanwhile, a disturbingly sizable portion of the nation wants the WORLD to come to an end.

Who knew the nutjobs who ran my old evangelical Christian high school (the largest in the country) were now wielding such influence.  I'm hearing my biology teacher (and textbook) teach us that dinosaurs were aboard Noah's Ark; I hear my history teacher once again reminding us that black folk were a separate creation (and that just because the Declaration of Independence says all men are created equal doesn't mean GOD intends it or thinks it right), and that the school's 20-year plan almost certainly would never come to fruition as the End Times were at hand (this was, of course, in 1982).

Sane religious folk and atheists unite and reclaim Sundays, as well as the rest of the week.
