    Didn't you make a plea about 1 1/2 - 2 years ago for money to buy yourself a new laptop?

    Might I suggest you get an extended warranty with the purchase of your next laptop?  Generally extended warranties are a bad idea from a cost/value perspective, but not with laptops.

    More than a decade ago I bought a $3000 NEC Versa Ultralite laptop.  Loved it.  Paid $400 extra for a 3 year warranty.  After 2 years, I started to have problems.  NEC tried fixing it 3 or 4 times and then ended up giving me a new one.  And I should note that the new one was NOT a new one of the same old model, but a new CURRENT model laptop, which was selling for about $2500 at the time.

    From a cost/value point of view, that $400 warranty ended up being worth $2500.

    When I later bought a Dell, I again got the extended warranty (and am I glad I did - that piece of crap needed a lot of repair work over time).

    I now use an HP, which I absolutely love and have had no problems with.  And yes, I did get the extended warranty.

    I'm primarily a PC user. But when I got the Powerbook three years ago....

    In general the lifetime expectancy is three years. The very recommended Apple extended warrantee lasts three years.

    I have an older laptop and desktop but I am a bit of a Mac geek, so I can take them apart and repair when necessary.

    If I were Jeralyn I would do as she is doing and get a new laptop and either sell the old or use it as an extra laptop.

    Also there are computer insurance policies that are equal or better than AppleCare. Some cover droping the thing or spilling liquid on it.

    But I always like the applecare phone service for problems or trouble shooting. It was a great way to learn about the machine.

    laptops since I started blogging. Two years is about as much as I get out of them. I work them very hard.

    Individual TalkLeft readers (in 2003 and 2005) bought two of them through Amazon links I provided.  I bought a new one in November '06 and the Powerbook a few years ago without bothering to mention it on TalkLeft.

    ...you promise to regularly back up your data in the future, onto whatever device and method works best for you (e.g. DVD-RW, USB drive, external HD, online, a networked desktop, etc.). Your data and work are too valuable to trust to mechanical devices that will invariably fail over time.

    And now you know the hard way... ;-)

    and I contributed enough for one key.  Please inscribe the ? key with my email address (joke from one who remembers each window and pew at shul having  a name plate on it.)

    I figure about 80 keys and about 2K total

    incidentally, staples has the 120GB passport external usb drive on sale for about $90.  very small portable and good for backups
