Headlines, NYTimes:

Democrats Fail to Force Vote on Iraq Pullout . . . The measure, which called for troops to begin departing within 120 days, was defeated in a procedural vote on what is known as a cloture motion. It received 52 “yes” votes, to 47 “no” votes, but Senate rules require 60 yes votes to pass the motion, which would have overcome a Republican filibuster of the measure.

How about this headline? "Dems Fail To Overcome GOP Filibuster on Iraq"? Same number of words and actually accurate.

To be a dirty word for our liberal press. Wonder Why?

    Another headline:

Republicans Flip Flop on Filibuster and Withdrawl of US Troops.

After perusing the google news entries and looking at a NPR story by Linda Wertheimer and Juan Williams , it is clear that there was no Republican filibuster. The word does not exist so the deed must not have happened.

Good thing it never happened, otherwise the Republicans would be unprincipled hypocrites.

Thanks to the liberal press for keeping the Republicans honest, one way or another.

The press is acting responsibly and using the word filibuster after all:

St. Louis Post-Dispatch, whose website leads with "Filibuster Fails to Force Iraq Vote."

hahahhaha A double whammy. The Republicans can do no wrong.

Dear Dems: The media is not your friend (5.00 / 2) (#10)

Trying the same tactics as your Repug counterparts will not work the same way. You don't have the corporate goons nor the glassy eyed flying monkey squadrons to do it.

Arranging an upperdowner to "prove" the Repugs are two-faced lying scum about Iraq -- and tying it all in a nice box with a bow for the media to convey -- is great in theory. It would work if your counterparts played straight up fair and square.

But they don't play that way and don't intend to. And the "refs" in the media already FRICKEN KNOW THE GOP ARE SCUM from dealing with the same goon tactics for decades.

I'm sorry to shout. My hormones have been unpredictable since you sold my uterus to these clowns cause they promised to be nice to you.

    Sincerely,
    Ellie

Is cloture the only option? (none / 0) (#11)
by procedurally perplexed on Wed Jul 18, 2007 at 05:57:58 PM EST
I had a quick question & wondered if anyone happened to know the answer off-hand: from what I've seen, everyone says that Reid's only option for forcing a vote on the amendment is through cloture. Since that didn't get the 60 votes necessary, the Republicans successfully blocked the bill. According to wikipedia, though, it's possible simply to leave the bill on the agenda and wait out the filibuster. Strom Thurmond's attempt to fillibuster the Civil Rights Bill was defeated in this manner. Why isn't this an option usually considered?
