American Idol: Congratulations, Jordin

If we can text message to pick the American Idol, and 74 million did, why can't we text message to end the war? I have no idea, but I wish someone would set it up.

Back to American Idol, for once I agree with the voters. With Melinda Doolittle gone, Jordin Sparks was clearly the winner over Blake Lewis. The voters agreed.

I watched the entire two hour finale. I didn't know most of those singing, since I only started watching a few weeks ago. I tried to watch at the end of last year, but Taylor Hicks, who ended up winning, was so white-bread mayonnaise I kept changing the channel.

The higlights tonight, in my opinion.

  • Smokey Robinson with the top male contestants as backup
  • The African Childrens Choir
  • Sanjaya Malakar with Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry (the hottest looking male of the night) performing "You Really Got Me"
  • Tony Bennett

The lowlights:

  • Taylor Hicks
  • Carrie Underwood
  • Bette Midler

Congratulations, Jordin. You are a worthy winner. I may even tune in next year.

    carrie underwood a low light? (none / 0) (#1)

she's a fantastic singer.  in my opinion she was the only one who did the beatles justice w/her rendition of "she's leaving home."

i'm a big carrie underwood fan, but i agree w/you about taylor hicks (and i think most of the audience also agreed w/you).

skippy is a big american idol fan.  it's the first program that shows the public just how incredibly difficult becoming a professional performer is, from start to stardom.

it teaches the public that it's just not as easy as it looks, and that a big part of being a professional entertainer is being able to make it look easy.

    And Sanjaya a highlight?!

Wow. They gave him the easiest song of the evening, and he missed every note. The tween and teen girls think he's the bomb though, so I'm sure he'll have a great career.

I did think Carrie was somewhat superficial in her thank you speech, especially in comparison to how much more personable and real she was when she was in the competition. Maybe that's what fame does to you?

Joe Perry did look great, the quintessential rocker, good on him.

Taylor Hicks' song was not the best choice, imo, for his talents. When he sings bluesy, not over-produced, non-"pop" songs he can stop me in my tracks.

Jordin was excellent, although her vocals literally fade away when compared to the range, depth and soul of Melinda and Lakisha, imo.

But, then again, AI is about pop music and idols after all...

Glad you liked the show. I really like AI and my wife and I watch it regularly - once the stomach-churning multi-city tryout episodes are over and the dozen or so best-of-the-best singers remain.

We thought last night's finale episode was pretty cheesy, but luckily most of the previous episodes were much better.

Ah well, to each his own.

American Idol is one of the worst things that has ever happened to music. They're not looking for musicians. They're looking for performers. They're looking for somebody pretty who can smile real big and sing well. They're looking for people that they can mold into whatever is popular. No truly great music will ever come out of anyone involved with American Idol. I just hope that new artists dont think they have to conform to the popular stylings to be able to make it big. But then again, those that are out there to get famous dont typically come up with any good music anyway. It's a shame though to see these people miss out on opportunities to come up with new styles and something that's never been done before just for the sake of conforming so that maybe Simon the grouch will like them enough to send them to Hollywood. Congratulations to the winner or whatever. Hopefully she wont sell herself short as an artist like the other AI winners. By the way, who were they? Carrie Underwood and...uh...uh...uh...hmmm
