Matt Yglesias spots one of the funniest pieces of journalistic hackery I've seen in a while:

The Attorney General was not told that he was a subject or target of the…investigation, nor did he believe himself to be,” the letter said, leaving Washington to choose between Waas’ credibility and that of the Bush Justice Department.

Let's see now, Murray Waas vs. Alberto Gonzales on the credibility meter . . . hmmmmm.

Hahahahahahahahahahaha. Boy, they got Waas good with that one. Hahahahahahahaha!

Time to pull out the old Spanish saying, "le salio el tiro por la culata." (The gun backfired.)

    about his experiences with the paper.

    I thought the Wash. City piece was a low blow and a pporly disguised personal vendetta.

    I am a fan of Murray's reporting.

    But I believe ridicule of the stupidity of the hit piece is in order.

    i recall an ongoing feud between the w.c. paper and waas.

    it had all the smell of vindictiveness and reporter's abuse of reportorial technique.

    the feud seemed to be clearly initiated by the w.c.p. reporters.

    when this happens, i sense money, as well as revenge, is involved.

    waas is an outstanding reporter and, lately,  has been commenting on the attorney general/doj disaster.

    hence, the attack on him,

    and hence my comment about money.

    this situation, in itself, merits, a good look by an investigative reporter other than waas.

    waas, in my opinion, is a national treasure, like seymour hirsch or david halberstam.

    I don't know what 'culata' means in Spanish but I do know what 'cul' means, pardon my French.
