Send Don Imus to Rehab

Radio talk show host Don Imus joined the ranks of Mel Gibson and Grey's Anatomy star Isaiah Washington yesterday with his comments about the Rutgers women's basketball team which has 8 black members:

Imus was speaking with producer Bernard McGurk when the NCAA title game between Rutgers and Tennessee came up.

''That's some rough girls from Rutgers,'' Imus said. ''Man, they got tattoos ...''

''Some hardcore hos,'' said McGurk.

''That's some nappy headed hos there, I'm going to tell you that,'' Imus said.

Rehab, anyone? There's lots of calls for his firing, despite his apology.

''It was completely inappropriate, and we can understand why people were offended. Our characterization was thoughtless and stupid, and we are sorry.''

It wasn't just thoughtless and stupid. It was racist. MSNBC which airs his show in the morning provided this weak statement:

''As Imus makes clear every day, his views are not those of MSNBC. We regret that his remarks were aired on MSNBC and apologize for these offensive comments.''

So will they take him off MSNBC? Of course not. Will he be fired? No. Boycotted? What difference would it make?

All we can do is publicize it.

And no, I'm not serious about sending Imus to rehab, it just seems to be the latest out for celebrities who muck up big time.

but could you please identify which century you're talking about? hell, i'll settle for a reasonably close decade.

yes, sen. byrd has a history. he has repeatedly repudiated it. the voters of his state seem to accept his repudiation, for what that's worth. in any event, he keeps getting re-elected, and wv has never been known as a particularly egregious offender, with respect to race relations. hell, that's why it broke away from va to begin with!

so, could you please cite some recent (within the past 10 years even) examples of sen. byrd's racism?

Poor guy. Thing is, Imus used to be the king of the shock jocks, in fact he helped invent the genre. But now he can't hold a candle to the intellectual perverts populating a good part of the radio and cable spectra - including a fair portion of what passes for political commentary these days - but he keeps on trying to be outrageous and instead just goes old-fashioned bigoted and crude.

Just an old guy trying to relive the glory days. I can't help feeling kinda sorry for him. (Not that I'd miss him if he were gone, but still....)

Send the I-man to the nearest bar & get the old dry drunk back on his sauce. He's not actually a racist; he's simply stupid, or stupidly simple, whatever.

Better yet, take a bottle into the studios & watch him lap it up like a puppy going after mama's milk.

Imus is a joke without a punchline.

I hope you don't mind an off-topic comment, but I think this is important: There is a great post on The Carpetbagger Report from a few days ago about the mainstream media's (specifically Time magazine's) ignoring the prosecutor purge scandal.

What explains the failure of the mainstream media to cover the purge scandal for so long, and so many other scandals? Do you think somebody just set up newspaper editors to cheat on their wives, and threatened to tell if the editors wouldn't play ball when they come back some day and ask for something?

It wouldn't be that hard to do, when you think about it. People wouldn't talk about it.

this kind of language is becoming much too common in COMMERCIAL public speech thanks to llimbaugh, o'reilly, et al.

but give his corporate handlers hell.

that's how you get control over these guys.

the labels et al will quit putting them on the shelves.

Some strong and continuing condemnations by the community leaders would go a long way towards shutting them down.

And BTW - Bad taste is bad taste.
